The Seattle Thunderbirds proved to be no match for the Kelowna Rockets in the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs. Kelowna defeated Seattle 5-2 last night at ShoWare Center in Kent; sweeping the T-Birds in four games to advance to the Western Conference Finals against the winner of the Portland Winterhawks/Victoria Royals series (Portland leads that series 3-1, with Game 5 taking place tonight at 7pm in Portland.

Seattle got on the board first late in the first period, as Ethan Bear scored on a power play. Kelowna came back in the second, scoring twice in two minutes. The Rockets added three more goals in the third to go up 5-1. Sam McKechnie was the only other T-Bird to score, notching his first playoff goal midway through the third period.

The following players say goodbye to the T-Birds, as they’ve finished their final season with the team (the WHL is a development league for players 16-20 years old): Russell Maxwell, who joined Seattle after spending three seasons with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and Mitch Elliot, who spent his entire WHL career as a T-Bird. (Note: I sat down with Mitch, his parents and his billet parents to talk about their experience over the past five years. The story should post by the weekend).

Andy Eide and Tim Pigulski from MyNorthwest.com have covered the T-Birds all season, with in-depth interviews and analysis. Read Andy’s final game recap here.
