A text out of the blue. Maybe out of the Red-White-and-Blue.

“I competed yesterday,” Melanie Roach wrote me, “Guess it’s time to send my ‘Coming out of retirement’ papers to USA weightlifting.'"

You might remember Roach, the mother and business owner from Sumner who competed for Team USA at the Beijing Olympics. All she did there was set personal records in her lifts and finish as the sixth best weightlifter in her weight class in the world.

She passed on trying for London 2012, leaning on the excuse that she had two more children (for a total of five now) since the Games in China. Along with running her gymnastics business, she really didn’t have time to train properly.

Well now, who knows?

“I’m dropping down a weight class so I can be more competitive internationally,” she said.

She didn’t make any predictions about the future, but would anybody be surprised if she stays with the sport she loves and takes a shot at Rio in 2016? Stay tuned.
