Some A-List Olympic celebrities, including local soccer star Hope Solo and gymnastics legend Kerri Strug will be VIPs at an auction and dinner benefit for a local teen gymnast who was left paralyzed during practice last month.
Jacoby Miles was injured Nov. 16 when she landed on her neck during a dismount from the uneven bars. She is paralyzed from the mid-chest down.
A dinner and auction for Jacoby is being held Monday at the Temple Theater in Tacoma, with all proceeds going to her medical and rehabilitation costs, Over 500 people bought tickets to the sold out event.
Also attending the event are 2004 All-Around gymnastics gold medalist Carly Pattyerson, 1996 Olympic team gold medalist Amanda Borden and 1984 Olympic team gold medalist Peter Vidmar.
Four-time gold medal gymnast Olga Korbut was scheduled to attend, but she fell ill and had to cancel. She will instead hold a clinic at Jacoby's gym next month.
Olympians from Western Washington will include bobsledder Bree Schaaf (2010), swimmer Ariana Kukors (2012), rower Adrienne Martelli (2012), cyclist Jennie Reed (2004, 2008, 2012), boxer Queen Underwood (2012), hockey player Kelly Stephens Tysland (2006) and weightlifter Melanie Roach (2008). Roach is a former gymnast and is the owner of Jacoby’s gym.
2012 400-meter hurdler Georganne Moline and actor Scott Schwartz will also be in attendance.
Former Washington Huskies and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Brock Huard will emcee and former Evening Magazine host John Curley will be the auctioneer.
