Sonics owners accused of dragging out fan lawsuit
07:07 PM PDT on Tuesday, September 23, 2008
SEATTLE – One of the chief architects in the effort to keep the SuperSonics in Seattle says Clay Bennett’s group has 30 million reasons to drag out a class-action lawsuit brought by Sonics fans.
Brian Robinson, the co-founder of Save Our Sonics, has no love for Bennett or his attorneys. They recently subpoenaed Robinson for all e-mails, records and contacts he had with city leaders, the NBA and the fans who filed the federal lawsuit, seeking tickets, travel and accommodations at the team’s 41 home games in Oklahoma City this year.

“We had a belief as fans that if leaving were harder, they would consider staying," said Robinson.
The franchise formerly known as the Sonics will play next month as the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Ford Center and have already sold out their allotment of season tickets.
Bennett’s attorney Brad Keller tells KING 5 News "Robinson clearly played a role in orchestrating the suit. We are just trying to get to the bottom of what his role was. Robinson shouldn’t be resisting the subpoena if he has nothing to hide."
"They're looking for dirt," said Robinson.
He claims in a motion filed Monday to limit the records release that Bennett’s actions are aimed specifically at alienating the Seattle area because his group “has significant financial motivations to."
"They have 30 million bucks on the line," said Robinson.
Under the terms of the settlement it reached with the City of Seattle, Bennett’s group, the Professional Basketball Club, will pay out that $30 million if the NBA has fails to return to Seattle within five years. That’s contingent upon the city and state coming up with funding to renovate KeyArena.
A judge’s decision on the subpoena could come within the next week or so.
"They used these theatrics to bludgeon and beat the city into submission to where the city quit because the situation got so ugly, and I think we're seeing that same thing happen with the fans."
Robinson claims the only contact he had with the ticket holders was for an attorney referral. The ticket holders’ trial is scheduled for next March.
