Poll:
Would you like to see the NBA come back to Seattle?

SEATTLE – The NBA has purchased the New Orleans Hornets, in an unprecedented move, and immediately renewed talk about a franchise in Seattle.

The league made the move, after spending months attempting to find a new owner for the team, which is struggling in attendance.  The franchise could potentially opt out of its lease at the New Orleans Arena if it falls below certain gate figures.

The NBA says its goal is to find a local owner for the Hornets.

However, the move has again sparked suggestions that the league is trying to find a way back to Seattle.

A Facebook page has already been established to “Bring the New Orleans Hornets to Seattle.”

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, a long time basketball fan, recently sold more than a billion dollars in stock.  Fans have suggested it was a sign Ballmer would make a move for a team.  He declined comment on the Hornets sale through a spokesperson today.

His business associate, Matt Griffin, who worked with Ballmer on a Key Arena remodel, said Monday “Nothing was in the works.”

Hornets coach Monty Williams told reporters after practice today, he wanted to stay in Louisiana, but “Business is gonna do what it do.  You know sometimes you can’t control that but we certainly want to keep the team here.”

NBA Commissioner David Stern also reiterated today his hope to keep the Hornets in New Orleans, but was asked about the potential to move the team to Seattle, Kansas City or Anaheim:

“I think in fairness, any purchase outside of New Orleans in the long run would involve the potential of a relocation fee, or at least a valuation of the franchise based upon a relocation fee.  But we didn't want to get into that now.  And so I think the best thing we can do is do this and let everyone who doesn't know what our e mail address is to know it and then we can receive such expressions of interest over time. But I think that anything that came in earlier than the early part of next year would be premature.”

The Hornets moved to New Orleans, from Charlotte, in 2002.  They played briefly in Oklahoma City after Hurricane Katrina.  Seattle’s Sonics franchise moved to the Sooner State in 2008.

If David Stern walked off a very tall cliff some time before the Hornets were moved out of New Orleans I would be in favor of them going to Seattle. Until that happens, I wouldn't want Seattle to try it's luck a second time with Stern. He's nothing but a greedy ignorant MORON.

Build a sports complex over in the Bellevue area where the old safeway distribution center was. That'd be a perfect place for it. They could also create a new NHL team that would share the complex. With Key arena, they could crush that building and construct like a museum of natural history or perhaps world history.

I sure hope no tax dollars ever go to build a new sports arena. I would think schools, roads and the homeless for a few items would come first before any talk of getting NBA back to Seattle.

I'm a sports fan, but this is silly. Let's start with the NBA. The league has a broken financial model, many teams, inlcluding the New Orleans team are having difficulty. The league will probably strike which means no basketball. The players are overpaid big time. For Seattle to get a team it would require a new arena, the Key was good enough until the NBA decided to get greedy. If some billionare like Balmer wants to build his arena, go for it. NO TAX dollars from my pocket should ever go to a new arena. NO extension of taxes! If they want to use future financial success - arena revenue to pay for their own debt, then no problem. I don't want to pay for millionare players so they can buy another BMW and purchase more weed. Most of the players are nothing but street thugs who if they weren't playing hoops would be selling dope on the street or in prison. David Stern and the other owners showed very clearly what they thought of Seattle basketball.

Getting a franchise back would be a great boost for the local economy and bring jobs to the city (unfortunately that city will probably be Bellevue or Renton rather than Seattle). If you don't want to pay the ticket prices, then don't go, but don't pretend you speak for all of us, especially when your complaints about the NBA are naive and based on stereotypes. If you don't like Stern, I get that; if you don't like basketball, I get that too. But don't tell me that NBA won't help the northwest economy and don't tell me that NBA players are different than any other professional entertainer.

Las vegas? They have the highest unemployment in the country and their housing market has basically collapsed. Plus they have no arena also. Not even sure if there is currently a viable ownership group there. KC may be in play because their arena has no major tenant. KC has other issues, but not the same issues that Seattle has. Other cities with tenants operating in suitable buildings could also come into play, but a shared tenancy by 2 different ownership groups is not something we are seeing a lot of these days, the Staples Center notwithstanding. I posted a response to Tiki about the New Orleans situation and why I think they are still good to go (for now), but it is not appearing for some reason.

ned, this is how Seattle gets another NBA team if it wants one: buy a team and build an arena. Based on what I have seen with west coast operations, it looks to me like there will not be a publicly funded arena in Seattle anytime soon, if ever. This means you need a Rose Garden type or Staples Center type of solution - a privately funded arena. Undoubtedly, there are people there who could afford to bring a team to Seattle and who would like to do it. But will they also pay the freight for a new arena? That's a big nut to deal with. If Seattle had an arena, it would be at the top of the list, undoubtedly, but since it doesn't and given government hostility to the arena situation, I actually see Seattle at the bottom of the list or simply not on the list. David Stern is not going to come back to Key Arena on a permanent basis. It's just not going to happen under any circumstances. I think the media in Seattle is being irresponsible, and falsely getting hopes up.

New Orleans is done, cutcut. If they had a local owner they would've found one, it's not a secret that the Hornets were going to have to sell. I imagine Kansas City, Seattle, or on the off chance Las Vegas will get the Hornets or Kings after the Lock Out next year.

cutcutcut is entirely correct. david stern isn't gonna approve the sale of the hornets to steve ballmer or whoever wants to buy them and bring them to seattle. david stern is all about the highest bidder that isn't seattle. stern believes seattle as a city and wa state politicians do not care for the nba so they will not dish out incentives such as a publicly funded brand spanking new arena with all the fixings. why would stern allow the nba to come to seattle, especially so soon? he wouldn't save face by doing that. steve ballmer can throw all the money he wants to david stern, the nba isn't coming back to seattle any time soon. the question you should be asking yourself is, "where was steve ballmer when howard schultz was trying to sell the team?" i grew up watching gary payton, shawn kemp, nate mcmillan, detlef shrempf, big smooth sam perkins, and i can honestly say the executives running the nba is so terrible i do not miss them one bit and do not care if they ever come back.

You're right. David Stern is NOT the NBA, but he is the guy who raised his middle finger to our city. Now, he needs a home for a team that is losing money. Look elsewhere, David.

djs425 _ I went to the Giants game and followed up with a dose of the KC game. It didn't make sense to me to spend money on the Panther game, second half proved me wrong, but for a minute it was looking dire. I disagree with your analogy of fair weather fans. I think true sport fans know what professional football looks like and the Seahawks just were not playing it. Going to a game cost over $100 a game. To me that is a lot of money, kinda like paying 12 bucks for a Adam Sandler movie; you end up watching it, wondering if its ever going to get better and it doesn't.

All the people whinning about the NBA in Seattle are the fairweather fans of Seattle. These are the 'fans' who only go to Mariner, Seahawk and Sonics games if they're winning and turn into Pittsburgh Stealer fans. When/If a team comes to Seattle please don't hop on the bandwagon. David Stern isn't the NBA, its the players that make the NBA

Theres something to be said about Seattle based teams. One, the owners treat the teams as a cash generating venue. Nothing is wrong with that except that it also means that the owners will not pay top dollar for talent. You end up with teams that have have one star and a bunch of role players. Marineers have Ichiro, Seahawks have Hasselbeck and the Sonic had Ray Allen, which the traded once Durant arrived. The teams are only good enough to bring fans to the stadiums. Adding some local flavor helps with the gate, but mostly the locals would not start elsewhere. (Trufunt,Malloy) Watch the Hawks go after Locker for the same reason. Once in awhile those low draft picks gel and you have a few good years, but fot the most part, we have to endure and "Wait till next year" becomes our rally cry.

As a life long Sonics fan I would love to see the Hornets come to Seattle!! I am a big Chris Paul fan and to see him play in my city would be amazing! I think a couple years without the NBA in town has really made Seattle CRAVE another team coming to town! Many of us are going to Portland just to see some games and I really hope that this deal could benefit the city of Seattle. Come on Ballmer, bring the Sonics back home!!!!!!!!!!!!

I lived in Seattle for 12yrs during the 90's and early part of this decade. Especially the playoff runs of the 90's, Seattle was buzzing with energy and excitement. I was in outside sales so I ran into hundreds of people from all walks of life on a daily basis. Everyone talked about the Sonics. Long before the Sounders and Holmgren, it was all about Sonic Basketball! This City supported it's Team and if it weren't for poor City and State leadership, this Team would still be here! I hate Stearn as much as the next person, but I refuse to allow that Hate to get in the way of getting another Sonic Basketball Team! I still refuse to support Schultz and would rather support local coffee businesses anyway. We need a voice, and we need intelligent, passionate leadership to get this done!!!!!! With you support getting another team or not, there is no denying that it brings in more tax revenue and boost the economy! I can't think of anyone that wouldn't welcome that!

This is a basketball city. The Sonics were a fixture here and were stolen. Having another basketball team would be great for the city's moral, economy, and overall reputation as a three sport market. If the Sonics had originally left because we could not support them, then this would be different. But we have the resources, and certainly have the passion that it takes to make an NBA team successful. All we need is the opportunity to get another team back here.

Stop sports team welfare. Cut the salaries of the players and let the teams make it on their own. If Steve Ballmer sold a billion dollars worth of stock, let him take a lesson from the owner in Florida. Build your own stadium, rent it out for other uses. The same with other sports ventures.Buy the baseball stadium, football stadium. Make it on your own dime not tax payers, many of whom don't care about your over paid under worked players.

Basketball is dead in Seattle. Key Arena is a really nice place, but greedy owners want bigger ( more seats, more tickets, concessions.) And want us to pay for it.....would be awesome to see Tacoma get the team. The Tacoma Dome truly does need a face lift and major indoor renovations.

Don't worry. You guys have no chance of getting this team. Stern is not coming back to the Key or head to the Tacoma Dome. Without an iron-clad new arena, you have no chance. Unlike the pols in Seattle and Olympia, the pols in La. will work with the NBA. Teams looking to leave do not hold lease extension negotiations, yet that is exactly what they are doing in New Orleans. Stern even said that the first order of business is to improve the lease through a lease extension. Your media isn't really reporting anything for you. BTW, I do agree that Seattle got jobbed by the NBA, which is precisely why Stern isn't coming back to the Key. If he now said that Key Arena is ok, then he implicitly admits that there was no legitimate reason for the Sonics to leave. He isn't going to make that admission, and you all know it.
