The NBA had no comment Friday on a report that Commissioner David Stern is firmly behind returning professional basketball to Seattle.
A Yahoo! Sports report published Thursday said Stern is "determined to get a franchise back in Seattle," citing league sources.
Stern was also characterized as a strong ally of Steve Ballmer, one of the investors working with Chris Hansen on a $490 million sports arena in Seattle.
On Thursday, Stern offered high praise for Seattle. "It's a great community and it would be nice if we could return," he said.
The team most-likely to be next to vacate its current home city is the Sacramento Kings. A spokesman for the Maloof family, which owns the Kings, said only that the organization is focused "on the excitement for this young team heading into this season."
