New M's pitcher Cliff Lee had surgery to remove a bone spur in his foot. Below is the M's official news release.
SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik has announced the following medical update on left-handed pitcher Cliff Lee.
Lee, 31, had surgery on his left foot on Friday, Feb. 5, in Little Rock, Arkansas. The surgery was performed by Dr. Bryan Burke. Lee had a spur in the foot that recently broke loose from its attachment. The surgery removed the floating spur, alleviating irritation and discomfort in the joint and surrounding tissues.
Lee will not require a cast. For 7-10 days he will be able to bear weight on the left foot and continue his upper body exercise program. Over a period of 2-3 weeks, he will gradually return to all normal baseball activities.
"We decided Lee should have the surgery as soon as possible, rather than try to pitch with the discomfort during the year," Zduriencik said. "To get it out of the way and have it behind us is important."
