SEATTLE - The University of Washington has now released a copy of the football recruiting violation it self-reported in August. It comes after KING 5 reported the incident involving players who purchased $300 worth of alcohol and nightclub tabs for recruits visiting Seattle.

KING 5's Lisa Gangel talked with head coach Steve Sarkisian last night about the report stating student-athletes bought alcohol for recruits, and he confirmed the situation.

He then said the recruits didn't have enough money to cover the tab, so the Husky players paid it.

UW Athletic Director Scott Woodward wouldn't go on camera today, referring us to Richard Kilwien, a UW spokesman.

Lisa Gangel asked: "So you can't confirm or deny that it was or was not alcohol?"

UW spokesman: "That's correct. The NCAA violation in question was related to the amount of money that was spent on entertainment expenses. However, there was a violation of the university's policy on official visits when they decided to take the recruits out to a nightclub."

It was a secondary violation that was reported in August of this year.

The recruits paid back the money and the players who took them out ended up doing community service.

@King 5 Condotta's blog exposed your farce. The public has confirmed the situation of your SLOPPY reporting.

Read the report that King 5 claims states "student-athletes bought alcohol for recruits" and you'll see that the report doesn't even mention alcohol, let alone state that student-athletes bought alcohol for recruits. King 5 just makes that up: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/huskyfootballblog/2010526389_read_th e_violation_report_your.html

The Times' Bob Condotta provided a link to the report, which proves that King 5 just made up the entire alcohol angle. To quote King 5, "KING 5's Lisa Gangel talked with head coach Steve Sarkisian last night about the report stating student-athletes bought alcohol for recruits, and he confirmed the situation." In truth, the report does NOT state anything about student-athletes bought alcohol for recruits. King 5 just made that up! So what we have is Sark confirming what the report actualy says, and since the report says nothing about alcohol, obviously, Sark didn't either. If King 5 had any integrity whatsoever, it would offer a complete retraction that alcohol was involved along with an apology to UW and its fans. Disgraceful.

Having now read the report posted on the Seattletimes Husky blog, I wonder where you came up with the alcohol angle. A 21 and under nightclub does not serve alcohol so why report they do? See I can make up the type of club too, but mine is more believable. There should be an apology given to the football team for the false accusations made about them. This is a poor job of investagative reporting. Embarrassing for you isn't it? Go Dawgs!

This was the most ridiculous story I've ever seen on the news. I have lost all respect for the credibility of the reporting by this station. I watch and read the news to get the TRUTH, not some spin on an old story that is so purposely saved for just the right moment, and is severely lacking in facts and accuracy. Last night I watched Komo 4 as my 11 'o clock news source. While they don't have "A King 5 Exclusive Story" about a recruiting violation aka accidental error that happened 11 months ago and is being passed off as breaking news. My relationship with King 5 is over thanks to this story.

I'm sitting and watching King5 news on Kong and again see the news upfront about this non-story. This is old news and I am very dissappointed in the quality of King5 News. After the real story was reported in your news partner The Times, I expected to log on to see some sort of an apology or clarification. No, just continuing the unsubstantiated alcohol implications as if this was a story. I also question the timing of the story. This is just not up to your quality standards. Old news from a year ago, cleared up in August - what are you folks doing?

apparently kilwien was willing to talk to a more respected media source and goes on-record regarding alcohol; "Kilwien said alcohol is not mentioned in the self-report filed by the school on the incident and said the players were not necessarily in an establishment where they were not legally allowed. Kilwien said the location is referred to as a "local nightclub" in the report to the Pac-10." http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/huskies/2010509762_uwfb15.html

i see that you have corrected mistakes made in the initial report without stating that you were wrong about them to begin with. sneaky, very sneaky. downright unethical, actually. that action furthers and continues to cloud the credibility of this report. steve sarkisian specifically offered to lisa gangel that his players bought alcohol for underage recruits? thats certainly implied here in an interestingly worded way. if thats the case, why not state it clearly? sarkisian "confirmed the situation"? come on now. all sarkisian confirmed is what he was quoted; that players covered the recruits tab. which is what was reported to the ncaa. an expense violation. why wasnt kilwien confronted with the information that sarkisian had specifically told gangel that alcohol was purchased?? because sarkisian did not say that. shame shame shame on you, king5. you want to report a violation, i submit this whole version of the story. got yer page some hits though, didnt it? again, for shame.
