Joseph Edward Duncan III
Authorities say the prime suspect in the kidnapping and killing of 10-year-old Anthony Martinez of Beaumont, Calif., has a long history of child torture. Duncan, a convicted child rapist from Washington state who was released from prison in 2000, became a dean's list computer science student in North Dakota before being arrested and charged with killing four family members and kidnapping and molesting 8-year-old Shasta Groene in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Groene case

Shasta and Dylan Groene
Shasta, 8, and Dylan, 9, were taken from their home in May after their mother, older brother and mother's boyfriend were killed. Shasta was rescued in a Coeur d'Alene, Idaho restaurant early July 2. Dylan's remains were found in Montana a few days later.

For eight years, frustrated Riverside County, Calif. Sheriff's detectives have pursued 15,000 leads in search of the man who snatched 10-year-old Anthony on April 4, 1997. Fifteen days later, his body was found buried under rocks in a remote arroyo.
