Mudslides halt Amtrak service between Seattle and L.A.

01:54 PM PST on Thursday, January 24, 2008

KING5.com

SEATTLE - Amtrak service between Seattle and Los Angeles has been suspended until at least Jan. 31 due to massive mudslides over the tracks north of Chemult, Ore.

There will be no alternative transportation provided.

Amtrak officials say the Coast Starlight service will be disrupted in both directions with no alternative transportation provided. The Union Pacific Railroad has also suspended all railroad traffic through the area.

Amtrak officials say the closure affects the northbound Coast Starlight (Train 14) until Jan. 31 and southbound Coast Starlight (Train 11) from Seattle to Los Angeles until Feb. 1. Officials warn those dates could be extended.

Officials say although the Coast Starlight is canceled in its entirety between Los Angeles and Seattle, Amtrak does offer service on other trains and buses between Southern California and the Pacific Northwest.

Passengers are encouraged to call 800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak.com for schedule information and train status updates.
