Football Daily Dose: Quinn Era on Hold in Cleveland

10:00 PM PST on Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Brady Quinn looked good in his first NFL start, throwing for 239 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Broncos' horrible pass defense in Week 10, but things have gone downhill in a hurry since then. Quinn completed just 41 percent of his throws over the next two games while playing through a fractured index finger on his right hand and will reportedly but shut down for the remainder of the season.

Quinn was examined Tuesday by Dr. James Andrews, who reportedly explained that the injury could worsen if he keeps playing because the tendon may detach from the bone. With the Browns out of the playoff picture at 4-7 there's no reason to take risks with Quinn, although evaluating him over the final five games would have helped shed light on Derek Anderson's future in Cleveland.

Instead, Anderson will finish up the year as a starter and the Browns will have to make an offseason decision on their long-term quarterback despite having seen Quinn throw a grand total of 97 passes in a game while being limited by a major finger injury for most of them. While it's possible that Anderson will change their mind in the next month, Quinn is still an overwhelming favorite to start in 2009.

Anderson's time in Cleveland is likely short thanks to a looming roster bonus, but he'll try to improve his trade stock versus the Colts, Titans, Eagles, Bengals, and Steelers. Unfortunately, aside from Cincinnati that's a very difficult schedule and he really hasn't played well since the middle of last year. Anderson has a chance to start somewhere next season, but for now he's a mediocre QB2 at best.

While the Brady Quinn Era doesn't get off to quite the start that Browns fans had in mind during all the "Brady! Brady! Brady!" chanting, here are some other notes from around football .

* While optimistic fantasy owners assumed that Carnell Williams is one again a big part of the Bucs' offense after seeing his 16 carries in the box score Sunday, it's important to note that nearly all of his action came after Tampa Bay had the win wrapped up. When not spending an entire half in clock-killing mode against the lowly Lions, the Bucs will continue to lean very heavily on Warrick Dunn.

Dunn has totaled 245 yards on 43 touches in two games since Earnest Graham's season-ending ankle injury and should continue to get the ball 20 times a game for the rest of the year. Dunn is a palatable RB1 option in PPR leagues because the Bucs' offense is almost guaranteed to get him a handful of catches per week and even in non-PPR formats he'll be a strong RB2 play in most matchups.

Williams may prove healthy and effective enough to steal some snaps, but taking major touches from Dunn will be difficult given that he's inferior as a receiver and pass blocker, and doesn't offer much in goal-line situations. If Dunn were to join Graham on the sidelines with an injury Cadillac would be forced into a prominent role, but short of that he's highly unlikely to have fantasy value until next season.

* If you're looking for a sneaky RB2 option this week, particularly in PPR formats, give some consideration to Kevin Faulk. Pittsburgh has allowed an NFL-low 2.9 yards per carry, so Sammy Morris and Benjarvus Green-Ellis figure to spend lots of time on the bench while Faulk gets snaps in receiver-heavy sets. No one has been able to pass on Pittsburgh either, but dumping the ball off to Faulk is easy.

Faulk was a complete non-factor against the Bills in Week 9, but aside from that he's averaged 85 total yards while scoring four times over the past seven games. He may only get a handful of carries if the Patriots abandon the run early, but the likelihood that Faulk will catch a half-dozen passes out of the backfield should all but guarantee him 50-plus yards. He'll be my RB3/FLEX in at least two leagues.

* Redskins coach Jim Zorn was the Seahawks' quarterbacks coach when Shaun Alexander was at his MVP-winning peak, which explains why Zorn was willing to bring Alexander out of semi-retirement last month to add depth to the Redskins' backfield. Unfortunately for Alexander, it also explains why he may be at the end of the line following Tuesday's release. If Zorn doesn't want him, who will?

Alexander racked up 1,958 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2005, but has averaged just 3.5 yards on 470 carries since and was deemed expendable in Washington despite the fact that Clinton Portis has added a strained ribcage to his long list of injuries. Ladell Betts is now healthy enough to be counted on as Portis' primary backup and Rock Cartwright is locked in as the No. 3 back with Alexander gone.

Two-Minute Drill: Convinced that he's now the long-term No. 2 wideout alongside Roddy White after totaling 498 yards through 11 games, Atlanta signed Michael Jenkins to a four-year, $20 million contract extension Tuesday . Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Eagles would save $9.2 million in cap space by trading Donovan McNabb in the offseason . Coach Mike Holmgren announced Tuesday that Julius Jones will get the Thanksgiving start against Dallas despite being benched in Week 12 while Maurice Morris ran for 103 yards . Coach Tom Cable said Monday that Michael Bush "has really taken" to playing fullback, but every indication from Bush is that he's very displeased with the move . Michael Vick pled guilty Tuesday to state dog-fighting charges in the hopes of getting an early release from prison . Browns owner Randy Lerner said Tuesday that he'll wait until after the season to decide on the futures of coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Phil Savage . According to coach Jeff Fisher, he has already "cleared the air" with LenDale White following Plumpy's complaints about getting just one carry in Week 12.

Red Zone: Reggie Bush has missed the past four games, but said Tuesday that he "definitely feels like this is the week" to return from a knee injury . According to coach Mike Tomlin, Willie Parker is questionable for Week 13 after coming out of Thursday night's game with more knee problems, extending Mewelde Moore's fantasy relevance . Brian Westbrook (ankle) missed another practice Tuesday, but said afterward that he expects to play Thursday night thanks in part to Correll Buckhalter being sidelined with a knee injury . Coach Tom Coughlin indicated Tuesday that he's optimistic about Brandon Jacobs' (knee) chances of returning this week . Marc Bulger (concussion) remains the Rams' starter, but must pass a neuropsych test before being medically cleared to play . Meanwhile, Santonio Holmes is expected to suit up this week despite suffering a concussion Thursday night . Ahman Green (knee) landing on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday leaves Ryan Moats and Darius Walker fighting to back up Steve Slaton . Kevin Smith (shoulder) was limited in practice Tuesday, but is expected to be ready for a full workload on Thanksgiving.
