KING5.com Staff

Here are the latest reports of the storm moving through western Washington. If you're planning on driving, please check your commute on our traffic map.

Latest reports:

10:00 a.m. Traffic incidents have dropped off considerably, and conditions on the major roadways have improved. So this is the last update in the wire. We'll continue to update the main story on KING5.com as well as cover breaking news as usual.

9:42 a.m. Seattle Police are asking for help locating a missing 82-year-old man who left the VA Hospital at 8:30 p.m. last night in his vehicle. Due to the storm, officers are worried about his well being. He's driving a blue 1984 GMC model 515 pick-up truck, WA license 34091DP. If you have any information, please call Seattle Police at 206-625-5011.

9:22 a.m. Southbound I-405 there's a spinout just south of NE 124th St. in the center lane.

8:51 a.m. DOT reports that traffic conditions are beginning to improve now that the sun is up, but there is still plenty of ice out there, especially on the side roads. DOT crews are continuing to apply sand and de-icer in critical areas. DOT cameras show smooth driving conditions along major highways and freeways. The number of accidents reported has also declined.

8:44 a.m. Seattle City Light reports 2,800 customers out in West Seattle.

8:36 a.m. An accident along southbound 405 at NE 116th St. is blocking the left lane.

8:31 a.m. The sun is now up, and it should begin to warm the roadways, although temperatures are still dropping.

8:27 a.m. SR 523 is closed due to "extremely hazardous driving conditions" from milepost 1 to milepost 3.

8:14 a.m. Orillia Road in Kent is jammed with cars and big rigs unable to navigate the ice. "The sun is not up yet, so things are not melting, they're actually icing over," said Eric Kirchner in TrafficKING.

8:03 a.m. A big rig hit the ice and is blocking the northbound I-5 off-ramp at Southcenter. And the right lane of Highway 99 is blocked at 148th St. SW from an accident.

8:02 a.m. Tacoma is now at 29 degrees. Seattle and Bellevue at 31 degrees. Everett, 26 degrees and dropping.

7:53 a.m. We're starting to get more reports of spinout accidents as the temperature continues to drop. A jeep has crashed at northbound 405 at the 520 interchange. An accident is partially blocking the on-ramp to southbound 167 from S. 212th St. In Federal Way along I-5 at 320th St, two vehicles have crashed.

7:47 a.m. Our photographer A.D. counted 127 cars abandoned along the side of SE Newport Way and Lakemont Blvd. SE on the Eastside. People are returning to their vehicles. One man told him that Bellevue Police called him this morning and told him to recover his car or it would be towed.

7:22 a.m. "A pretty good commute for the most part," says Eric Kirchner in TrafficKING. Icy spots have triggered the occasional spinouts, but traffic is light for this time of day.

7:12 a.m. Tim Robinson says the West Seattle Bridge is a little slick, but overall traffic is doing well.

7:09 a.m. DOT says it's "really worried" about roads and overpasses icing back over again this morning as temperatures continue to drop until the sun comes up. DOT crews are still out in full force with sanding and de-icer trucks.

7:03 a.m. Big trouble spots are the off-ramps off I-90 on the Eastside, especially exit 18, where many abandoned cars line the sides of the roadways.

6:51 a.m. Sea-Tac Airport reports that everything is operating on schedule. Planes are being de-iced.

6:05 a.m. Another report from Doug MacDonald, state transportation secretary. "We have a lighter than normal commute," he says, although "people are speeding." He says the de-icers are trying to hit the areas that are icing over as temperatures continue to drop this morning. One big trouble spot: Puyallup River Bridge, where there have been multiple accidents, which have been cleared.

5:56 a.m. Aerials from TrafficKING show dozens and dozens of abandoned vehicles along the snowy side streets in Newcastle.

5:48 a.m. In Pierce county, "all available resources" are working to de-ice and sand the roads. Transit buses are on snow routes and most are delayed. "Anyone who doesn't have a need to travel today should stay home," says the Pierce County road operations department.

5:46 a.m. Several accidents along southbound I-5 at the Puyallup River Bridge in Tacoma due to ice.

5:34 a.m. To add to the reports of abandoned cars: the DOT camera at I-90 at Sunset Way shows dozens of cars abandoned along the side of the road.

5:24 a.m. Jane McCarthy says the slickest part of I-5 north of Seattle to Arlington is through Lynnwood. The HOV lanes are iced over, but traffic is moving steadily through the rest of the lanes. Side streets throughout Snohomish County are very icy in parts. Community Transit service in the county is on regular schedules, but some buses will have to re-route.

5:22 a.m. Seattle, Tacoma and Everett school districts are now closed for the day, among many more. See our school closures section to see if your district or private school is affected.

5:18 a.m. State Transportation Secretary Doug MacDonald says road crews have been able to "get ahead" of the ice on the main highways. The side roads are another matter, he said. "I don't expect it to be the world's greatest commute, particularily as it gets colder, but we're functioning right now."

5:16 a.m. Traffic moving slowly on I-5 through Tacoma, but no accidents so far. I-5 at SR 516, looks like a spinout accident. I-5 through Seattle and north to Everett looking fairly normal, although traffic moving a little slower.

4:12 a.m. - The Washington State Department of Transportation says over the past three days they've treated at least 22,000 lane miles of highway in Western Washington. That's nearly enough to circle the globe (if you're counting, the earth's circumference is closer to 24,900 miles). The DOT brought in as many as 19 additional trucks from central and eastern Washington to help clear snow, fight ice and improve traction. More than 220 vehicles worked overnight plowing snow and treating trouble spots.

Crews are out pre-treating roadways in anticipation of more ice and snow focusing particularly on ramps, overpasses and bridges.

4:02 a.m. - Crews are trying to plow Issaquah Fall City Road coming up from East Lake Sammamish Parkway, but they're having to go around roughly two dozen abandoned vehicles on the hill, according to KING employee Greg Thies. 10:06 p.m. - Ice during the morning commute is a big concern for the Washington State Department of Transportation. DOT spokesman Bill Vlcek suggests people try to spread out the commute in the morning to improve the commute for everyone. "If they can flex their arrival and departure time that would be helpful, and above all, drive carefully and leave enough stopping distance," Vlcek said.

10:04 p.m. - Snow shower activity is tapering off, but up to another inch could come tonight, according to Meteorologist Rebecca Stevenson. Because of falling temperatures, it will be a "slippery, icy" commute, she said.

6:50 p.m. - Ferry problem: Due to a slick roadway, the Fauntleroy-Southworth ferry docked at Vashon Island is unable to offload vehicles. The slick road has created gridlock at the terminal.
