Aurora motel goes out in style

08:03 PM PDT on Friday, September 14, 2007

Going out in style

The Bridge Motel in Fremont has been closed for business since last weekend, but every room is full now. That's right, the hotel is prepared for its "last hurrah."

At some point, the graffiti overtook the once "clean and quiet" motel.

The retired police officer who built it for tourists and business travelers back in 1954 probably had no idea it would later keep his colleagues busy with drug busts, prostitution and worse.

D.K. Phan has run the motel since new owners bought it with plans to tear it down and build townhouses in its place.

Now the time has come for demolition. But D.K. looked past the mess - the falling-apart eyesore - and saw art waiting to happen.

Before it's torn down, artists have moved in, transforming every room into a platform for expression.

D.K. talked the new owners into letting the old motel have one last night to shine. Artists who wanted to help the motel go out in style got a room - or a wall or ceiling - to do with what they wish.

Check out the video to see just how the place looks.
