Baby gives mom idea for booming business
04:10 PM PDT on Tuesday, August 28, 2007
There's a woman in West Seattle whose daughter's cold legs have given her a big leg up in business.
BabyLegs
The little legwarmers Nicole made for her daugher kept turning heads.
For Nicole Donnelly, life has been a series of big leaps. She was a professional snowboarder, pushing herself to incredible heights, no matter what the risk.
After being forced to retire from boarding, she jumped into marriage and motherhood when she had a baby girl named Sara.
But her latest leap sent this stay-at-home mom into a direction she never saw coming.
It started when Nicole tried a unique way to help her daughter's diaper rash.
"I cut my sock off, my snowboard socks, and pulled them up over her knees 'cause it was in the springtime and it was still cold outside and we had hardwood floors, so I needed to air her bottom out and not have it in a diaper," she recalled.
The little legwarmers she made not only kept Sara comfy, they also turned heads.
"People thought it was just so cute and we'd go to play groups and she'd have her little leg warmers on, so they asked where I got them and I'd just make more for her and then I'd wind up making them for her friends and they just started buying them from me," she continued.

And the buying never stopped.
Today, Nicole has taken her little idea and turned it into a big business she calls BabyLegs.
"We had a 500-square-foot garage, two-car garage, that we worked out of. Now we have a 4000-square-foot warehouse and office space," she said.
What she used to sell out of Sara's diaper bag is now packed and shipped around the world.
"We have BabyLegs in 30 different countries to consumers, 20 different countries for retailers," she said.
BabyLegs has grown so big, Nicole has hired 14 full-time employees to keep up, including her mom.
"I quit my corporate job in May so I could work full time for her and it's been the best thing I've ever done," said Beth Sheets, her mom. "I'm very very proud. I've always thought she could do anything that she set her mind to and she's really proved it with this."
"By the end of the year, we'll probably be over a million and a half dollars in sales," said Nicole.
So what advice does this mom-preneur have for other people with bright ideas?
"As a very independent, stubborn-headed person, I never like to ask for help, but the biggest thing I've learned is to ask for help from people," she said. "Try to find the best possible in every way for business advice."
Big leaps are nothing new for Nicole Donnelly, but if she doesn't watch out, the success of BabyLegs could have her making another jump very soon.
"I feel like it's not going to be enough space for us for very long," she laughed.
BabyLegs has just come out with a new organic line that you can find online or at stores like Whole Foods and Nordstroms.
