'Young Frankenstein' comes to Seattle
08:21 AM PDT on Tuesday, August 21, 2007
It's a film so popular fans know all the lines by heart -- "Give my creation life" is a well-known line among movie buffs.
Mel Brooks' 1974 movie "Young Frankenstein" is a big-screen, comedy classic.
Now, 33 years later, Mel is resurrecting one of his greatest creations for the stage.
Trying to prove it's more than just a movie, Mel hopes his new stage version of "Young Frankenstein" will be his latest Broadway smash.
But before it takes over New York, the musical monsterpiece will debut in Seattle.

"Tom Meham did 'Hairspray' here," Mel says, "and he said that the audiences were hip, they were bright, they were joyous and he got standing ovations. And you know 'Hairspray' is good, but we're better."
A huge cast joins Mel in Seattle, including actress Megan Mullally who plays Elizabeth in the show.
"I was so thrilled that we were going to be in Seattle," she says. "The weather is so great and it's such a fun city."
But one challenge for this all-star cast might be living up to the performances of the past.
"Everybody has a great deal of respect for all of those iconic performances," Mullally says, "but since we are doing a musical and since it's on stage, it's the same but it's totally different."
From the big screen to the Seattle stage, "Young Frankenstein" has come back to life in a big way. No matter which version you prefer, Mel says putting this production together has been a monster of a task.
"We are musical comedy," he says. "That's a rare animal. We gotta get laughs. We gotta thrill you with songs and production numbers. And in the end, we gotta touch you."
"Young Frankenstein" is alive!
