Getting a better car deal with the Amazing Autowoman

03:55 PM PDT on Monday, March 12, 2007

By SAINT BRYAN / Evening Magazine

When we buy a house – the most expensive purchase we'll ever make – we hire experts to help us negotiate the best price.

But what about the second most expensive purchase we make? Is there a better way to buy a car than negotiating for hours and hours at a dealership?

Evening Magazine

Heidi can do the checking and haggling for you.

Well, there is!

After nine years behind the wheel of her Nissan Pathfinder, Jennifer decided life's too short not to drive around topless.

"I just always wanted to buy a convertible," she said.

But even this successful software saleswoman dreads all the negotiations that typically come with buying a new car.

"I haven't bought a new car for nine years and when I bought the Pathfinder I spent hours and hours looking for the right one," she said.

It was a rough experience for Jennifer who doesn't know if she got a great deal or not.

Research and negotiating takes hours, the kind of free time a busy sales executive just doesn't have.

Therefore she hired Heidi Hough, the Amazing Autowoman, to find, negotiate and buy the car for her.

"I've got my heart set on the new Nissan 350Z," said Jennifer.

"They just pay me a fee and I tap into my huge network of dealers that I work with and try to find the dealer that has the best price for the client," said Heidi.

Her fee runs $300, but it's money Heidi almost always makes up by buying a new or used car for substantially less than most of us could.

So what does Heidi know about buying a car that the rest of us don't know?

Jennifer gets what she wants without any effort.

"There's a lot of inside information that I wouldn't want to publicize on the air," she laughed.

Heidi's secret is actually very simple. She helps clients buy so many cars – up to two dozen a month – that dealers offer Heidi a fleet discount.

"When she comes in and makes the same deal over and over on the same car, it's kind of pointless for us as a dealership to try to get a higher price when we already know we're going to end up at the lower price," said Peter Chung, Magic Toyota general manager.

Heidi enjoys the art of the deal.

But the real payoff is delivering the new car to her clients.

"I live for the moment. I love to see the excitement," said Heidi. "Everybody uses the word 'painless' when they're done… and that's the way it should be when you're spending $10,000, $20,000, $30,000. It should be painless."

Resources

"The best part was she negotiated the price with the dealer," said Jennifer. "I didn't have to haggle at all. She saved me thousands of dollar so that was worth it for me right there."

Even with Heidi's fee, Jennifer saved more than $5,000 on the popular Nissan 350Z and hours of negotiating.
