Meet the Northwest's quirkiest pets

08:48 PM PST on Friday, February 16, 2007

By MICHAEL KING / Evening Magazine

Every dog in the world wants to play. But Maija, the Schnauzer/Pomeranian mix from Milton, Wash. has something special behind that door.

It's just a balloon, but what Maija does with it ramps it up.

"She's like the life of the party," says owner Dorothy Kalthoff. "People get bored with me. They say, 'go get the balloon.'"

Kalthoff never really trained this volleyball pooch.

"I was playing with her one days with the balloon," Kalthoff says, "and she just bopped it with her nose."

On to our next quirky pet.

Either that car has some bad brakes, or that was a horse in the back seat. Even though he rides in a Saturn, his name is Cadillac Jack. He's just 25 inches tall - probably the smallest horse in the state.

Jack met us at Woodland Park for a little afternoon jog. He can't help but turn heads. Hardly a surprise seeing as he's a miniature horse.

Next up is Henry the wonder pug. If there was ever proof that dogs understand humans more than we understand them, this is it.

Dr. Andy Neff of Bellevue, Wash. has a doctorate in mathematics from Princeton, but he's not the only brain in the family. See, Henry knows 30-some toys by name. Neff can call out the name of a toy and Henry will retrieve it.

Make sure to watch the video to see just how Henry does it. Also, watch part 1 where a dog brings in garbage cans, a chicken gets hypnotized and the world's strongest cat shows off its powers.
