This city has about 23 miles of inland freshwater canals.
You can spend hours here paddling, fishing, and exploring. A lot of people miss these canals because they think the only water here is the beach.
But you can rent kayaks and enjoy some flatwater instead of pounding surf.
One person who studies the surf and the currents that feed it is Seattle oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer. He's managed to learn a lot about the Pacific, by studying what washes up on the beach.
