You can't see them, but one teaspoonful of healthy soil can have a couple of miles of mycorrhizae in it.

These fungi filaments ferry nutrients into plant roots, and adding it to seeds,  or to hair roots while transplanting can reduce transplant shock, encourage fruiting and flowering,  improve drought tolerance and protect from root disease.
