It's a long way from Rodeo Drive, but Front Street in Coupeville on Whidbey Island is becoming a good place to shop for designer bags. It's all thanks to one woman's admitted obsession and the store that grew out of it.
"I have a handbag addiction," Kim Hoctor laughed. "I actually have a closet that is full of shoes and handbags only. So, I have a little bit of a problem."
She turned it into a solution for other women who love designer labels, but hate the prices. At the Handbag Consignment Shop, she re-sells purses for 50-75% off retail. They're also guaranteed 100% authentic, because Kim is on a personal mission to end the counterfeiting industry.
"People don't realize it's actually funding child labor and terrorist organizations, and as a military spouse, I just can't support that," she said.
Kim thinks women will bypass the fakes if gently-used authentic bags are affordable. She carries second-hand purses from designers like Louis Vuitton, Coach, Fendi, Gucci, and Versace. Prices typically range from $50-$1,200.
Her business also offers customers the chance to make money by consigning bags they don't use anymore.
"Come to Coupeville, relax a little bit, have some wine, go down the street, come back up here and do a little shopping," Kim said.
The Handbag Consignment Shop is located at 7 Front Street in Coupeville. It’s open for business, but the official grand opening is August 24.
