Clinton sounding optimistic

Associated Press

Posted on March 19, 2010 at 7:31 PM

MOSCOW (AP) — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says there are indications that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH'-hoo) is ready to address U.S. concerns about settlement plans that complicate peace efforts.

Speaking at the news conference in Moscow, Clinton says she's continuing discussions with Netanyahu and his government. She says what she has heard from the prime minister has been "useful and productive."

Clinton is in Russia for a meeting of the so-called Quartet group of Mideast negotiators. The group is trying to plan for indirect peace talks with Israel and Palestinians, with the U.S. as the go-between.

Clinton dispatched U.S. Mideast peace envoy George Mitchell to visit Israel and the West Bank to try to get the talks going.

She said she expects to see Netanyahu in Washington next week.
