JERUSALEM (AP) — Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews are demonstrating outside an Intel facility in Jerusalem against the U.S. company operating on the Jewish Sabbath in the holy city.
Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby put the number of Saturday's protesters at 3,000.
Religious Jews are forbidden to work on the Sabbath, which lasts from sundown Friday till Saturday night.
Most businesses close in Jerusalem during the Sabbath. Those who open are located away from religious neighborhoods to avoid conflict. Intel is located near a religious area.
The ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters chanted "Shabbes! Shabbes!" — the Yiddish word for Sabbath — and yelled abuse at police.
