ISLAMABAD (AP) — Militants have again attacked Pakistani military personnel in Islamabad, apparently in retaliation for the continuing military offensive along the Afghan border.
Gunmen on a motorcycle wounded a senior army officer and soldier today shortly after the pair drove from the officer's home, the third such attack in about two weeks. The gunmen sped away after the shooting.
A hospital official says the officer, who holds the rank of brigadier, and the soldier are in stable condition.
Officials say the brigadier was wearing civilian clothes when he left his home in an official vehicle. Such vehicles often bear an army insignia.
No group has claimed responsibility, but suspicions fell on the Pakistani Taliban. The group deems the government un-Islamic and is angry about its support for the U.S. war on terror.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for many other attacks.
