Chechen human rights activist abducted in Moscow

Posted on November 5, 2009 at 8:04 AM

MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian rights group says Chechen authorities have abducted a human rights advocate in Moscow.

The Memorial group said Arbi Khachukayev was detained Thursday by Chechen security officers in the Russian capital. It said the officers were trying to fly him to the Chechen capital of Grozny against his will.

Khachukayev heads a Chechen rights group named Law that has exposed alleged human rights abuses committed by forces loyal to Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov.

Chechen officials were not available for comment.

A string of Kadyrov's critics and political rivals have been killed recently but the Kremlin has praised Kadyrov for pacifying the southern Russian region after two separatist wars.
