KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter's foundation says its observers in Sudan's upcoming nationwide elections are being obstructed in their work by the African country's authorities.
The Atlanta-based Carter Center said on Tuesday that its observers, as well as local monitors, have not been issued the necessary permits that would allow them to move freely and observe voter registration ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections next April.
Sudan has invited the Carter Center to monitor the vote — the first time balloting will take place in all regions of the war-ravaged country. Registration of voters began on Sunday.
Holding the elections was a key part in the 2005 peace deal that ended the more than two decades long north-south civil war.
