When Seattle mayor-elect Mike McGinn was campaigning, he promised to place a measure before the voters to expand light rail service to more of Seattle within two years of being elected.

He talked about running a light rail line up the west side of the city, connecting neighborhoods like West Seattle, Ballard, Interbay, Belltown and maybe even Fremont.

He said the city could build light rail more efficiently than Sound Transit, using existing right-of-ways to reduce the cost of land acquisition.

Currently, McGinn is also soliciting ideas from residents about what to do when he becomes mayor. Extending light rail is one of the most popular ideas.

But how do you pay for it? Nothing is close to definite but McGinn did suggest a transportation benefit district that could raise as much as $100 per vehicle (although roughly $25 of that is currently slated for replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct).

In any case, what do you think of the idea of Seattle building its own extension of light rail within the city limits? Good idea or bad?

Light rail is great, if it works to connect neighborhoods. the current Light Rail is essentially unusable becasue there is no way to easily get to a station from afar. unless one is willing to walk for an hour, or to take a bus, which easily can take an hour, to get to a light rail station, who really benefits?nonetheless, it is important to start somewhere. i would love to see the City expand the ida of the initial monorail lines, build a seamless transportation net, and include parking lots, and ltos of them, to allow those of us who realloy want to use the system but are no where near it to do so. however, it msut be noted that this will cost money, and a lot of it. How much money are people willing to spend on things liek stadiums, tunnels, flaoting bridges and light rail?

Somebody has to pay for it, and I doubt that taxpayers are willing to open their wallets again to do this.

Traveldoc is right that we need bus service between light rail stops to get people to the next rail station. They are not really walking distance apart. I hope Seattle can pick one line to build first, and get it built before moving on to the next one. West Seattle is the ideal area to reach first. The engineering hurdles getting to West Seattle are much less daunting than the engineering hurdles getting to Ballard. Line construction could start from SODO station and move out from there. I have little doubt that if the engineering proves feasible, Seattleites will vote to do this just like we voted repeatedly for monorail, as well as for KC Transit Now and Sound Transit 2. Transit is turning out to be the real replacement for the viaduct's capacity. Hopefully, the politicians will listen to the people and cancel the $4 billion deep-bore SOV tunnel to nowhere.

West Seattle and Ballard are in dire need of alternate access. I5 access from the bridge is horrid as it leads the lemmings right to one of the top 5 traffic snarls in the whole country, the I90-I5 split. 99 is better, but the viaduct is a deathtrap waiting to fall down. This area needs an option 'C' as A and B suck. But if you tax me and don't build it, I should get EVERY STINKIN' DIME YOU CHARGED ME BACK (See Monorail Tax for how much that sucked....) HK
