Villainous hackers are using superheroes' names to target people searching for information about their favorite character.

Anti-virus and anti-spyware software company McAfee released a list on Monday of the "most toxic" superheroes that result in the greatest number of online threats when searched. Capitalizing on superheroes' renewed place in the spotlight because of movies like Iron Man and The Avengers, hackers are using websites with superhero names to target consumers.

When these 15 superheroes' names are searched, consumers have a high risk of landing on a website that tests positive for spyware, adware, spam, phishing, viruses and other malware, McAfee said.

McAfee listed some tips to stay clear of online threats when searching online:

  • Be cautious about links to free content or too-good-to-be-true offers
  • Double-check the web address for misspellings or other clues that the site may not be safe
  • Search safely with a plug-in that notifies you of potential risks
  • Protect yourself with security software on your devices
