What's the best way to tell your friends, family, and extended network about important news in your life?

Many people turn to social media to make major announcements - events like new jobs, engagements, even pregnancies.

Noelle Firth posted a picture on Facebook of her dog holding a sign to tell all her friends she's expecting a baby girl.

"They're people that becuase you've connected online and you're following their life, you still feel that connected and you want to share that information with them. So this is an easy way to say 'hey, this is happening.'"

Noelle did tell her parents and her boss about her pregnancy before she posted the news online.

Ryan Holmes, CEO of the social media tool 'Hootsuite,' says these Facebook and Twitter announcements make sense, "We are busy, sometimes it's easier to send one message to Facebook than to call everyone to tell them what's going on. It's a real trend right now."

Holmes says based on Hootsuite's data, the most viral time to post is 1 p.m. on Friday.

So will Noelle continue to post on Facebook once her baby comes?

"I definitely see a lot of people posting everything and anything about their babies, I probably won't do that much. I'm sure once I'm there I'll be excited about everything and probably be annoying, lots of pictures, I'm big on pictures."
