PORTLAND -- A Northwest Portland mother was shocked to discover porn images on what was sold as a brand new Android Cruz Reader tablet purchased at a Big Lots store.

Mallorie Handke thought she had scored a great discount deal for the tablet, purchased for her five-year-old son.

"It's really nice," she told KGW, "Well. It seemed really nice."

Though her son's birthday was several months away, she decided to take at look at the tablet now and could not believe what she saw - photos and videos of young women in compromising positions.

"I was just shaking, sick," she said, "Everything I saw made me so sick."

The original plan was for her son to open and start up the tablet.

"To have him find this, that would just be devastating, it would be horrible," she said.

She purchased the tablet on Tuesday. Portland police investigators examined the tablet and determined the porn files were downloaded through Jan. 31.

A Big Lots employee had assured her the tablet was brand new when she picked it up off the shelf. The company was shocked and apologetic when KGW called them about the tablet.

"We can't believe it.There have been no instances of this happening ever before," a senior executive said.

The company will undertake a complete review to determine how the porn was placed on the tablet, he said.

Wait she was giving that to a 5 year old. What 5 year old wants something like that. Get him a bike and have him play outside in the dirt or play games with his friends. I am guessing, just like the others, that someone returned it and then big lots resold it.

Maybe I should "stand corrected" in this instance..Sounds logical and reasonable that this "reader" was purchased, used and then returned..

The old saying is "you get what you pay for." and when you shop at Big lots, you get what you pay for!

It's Big Lots, AKA Pic-N-Save. Is it really that surprising that they sold a used device as new? And big deal. The kid is 5. He wouldn't remember it. Even if he did, big deal. Educated kids make better decisions.

There's no way it would have been packaged at the factory like that. More likely is that someone returned it.
