SEATTLE – An elaborate new computer virus threatens to let hackers take money from your bank account while covering their tracks, preventing account holders from knowing they’ve been victimized.

MSNBC.com reports the virus swaps out banking web pages, thereby preventing account holders from knowing their money is gone.

The best example to explain how it works is a scene from a spy or heist movie. The spy hacks into a building’s surveillance camera feed and makes it look like nobody is there when, in fact, someone is walking right by the camera.

The same thing applies with the new virus. When a person uses an infected computer, the virus steals their login information and tricks them into revealing other personal information. The thieves then use that information to take money from the accounts. But later, when the victim tries to log on again, the virus intercepts them and makes it look like there have been no fraudulent transactions.

Typically, the advice is to check your statement online for any fraudulent use. But if you keep checking on the same computer, you won’t know there is anything wrong. The only way to find it is to access your account on an uninfected computer, go to an ATM or wait for your bank statement in the mail.

The new virus came to light after a large retail bank in the U.S. discovered it. The bank was not named in the MSNBC.com article.

This news of this virus is really scary to me! You didn't mention whether one's computer virus/spyware program would catch the fact that the virus in on your computer and get rid of it BEFORE they drain your bank account. It would be nice to know what the consumers can do to prevent this from happening!! Taking all my money out of my bank doesn't seem to be a viable solution. This has me worried and freaked out! If there is a way to prevent it, I would sure like to know......

"The new virus came to light after a large retail bank in the U.S. discovered it. The bank was not named in the MSNBC.com article.".... QUESTION: Why was the "bank not named"...??? --- Would this information be an 'invasion of privacy' against the bank? --- How about ALERTING THE PUBLIC by telling us all the information, such as, how, when and where, also what kind of 'bug' or virus would "rob your bank account without you knowing".? --- I think it would be a very INFORMATIVE ARTICLE if it was FINISHED, or do the writers of these types of articles just like to leave everyone hanging in mid-air????.

A simple way to prevent this is to use Linux, like Ubuntu. Linux does not get viruses, it's like a house made of bricks while Windows is made of paper cards.

Agreed beef, I use a local credit union and I always take my paychecks in person, no direct deposit. It helps to keep track of my account balance better than just banking online. I've never had any problems ever. My fiance on the other hand is banking with a major bank and a hacker is currently draining $20/hr from his account, and they can't seem to keep him out of the account. So all the money was pulled in person to prevent further damage. I suppose it is a possibility that he has this virus. Always be aware of the risks when using sensitive info on the web. It is easier, but if someone really wanted your info it's likely that they could find a way to get it.

Next time you see someone touting the "ease" and "convenience" of online voting, think about this. Nothing poses a greater risk to our democracy than a vote with no paper trail.

Bank locally and check on your account with a person the only virus they'll have is a cold virus, so don't let them cough in your face... So whats your Beef ?

Which is another reason I don't use my checking account. Thieves won't get much out of it because there isn't anything in it.

The new virus is called the B of A "Ben Dover edition". Shame the article from the source didnt mention the retailer. Surely KING TV which is a part of NBC could have found that out or is this a case for "GET JESSEE"? KING 5 needs to stop hiring middle school interns to work for research and pay them by offering a text messsaging plan free of charge as long as the kid sends all of the adult staff copies of the sexting pis he gets.

This Trojan has been out in the wild for a while now and just now getting attention. Interesting how online security news gets buried until its too late for some.
