The hacker group known as "Anonymous" promises to take down Facebook on November 5, saying "we are not harming you, we are saving you" to all fans and users of the social media site.
The "hacktivists" (a mix between a hacker and an activist) as they have been called, have been connected to many mass hack projects of the past year. In April, Sony announced that members of Anonymous were in large part resposible for successfully hacking into the PlayStation Network. Just last week the group broke into 70 law enforcement websites as well as took down the Syrian Ministry of defense website.
This newest operation is fittingly being called OpFacebook. In the YouTube video message describing the attack, the group explains their intensions are to keep people safe from Facebook’s lack of privacy.
In the video the group makes bold claims such as, “Facebook knows more about you than your family” and “Facebook has been selling information to government agencies.” They claim that the attack “is not a battle over the future of privacy and publicity. It is a battle for choice and informed consent.”
Though the group is known for taking extreme measures, in a recent tweet Anonymous wrote “OpFacebook is being organized by some Anons. This does not necessarily mean that all of Anonymous agrees with it.”
The more than 750 million Facebook users will have to wait until November 5 to see if Anonymous lives up to its promise and takes down the world’s most popular social media site. Their promise which eerily echoes the famous line from the 2006 film, “V for Vendetta” – Remember, remember, the fifth of November.
