Facebook was down for about 31 minutes worldwide, which is the longest Facebook has ever been down.

The outage is thought to have occurred just before 1 a.m. PDT.

During the outage, if a user tried to access the site, they saw a message from the social network: “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”

After coming back online, a Facebook spokesperson told CNET, “Earlier this morning, we experienced an issue that prevented people from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time. We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100%. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Since users couldn’t post Facebook statuses during the outage, people instead took to Twitter to vent their frustration.

Facebook said in an email to NBC News that it was aware of "the problem" but did not elaborate how what caused the outage or how many users were affected.
