Mount St. Helens slide shows
11:40 PM PDT on Wednesday, May 11, 2005
On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted with a force equivalent to 1,000 atomic bombs. The blast scorched a 14 to 17-mile radius around the volcano and mowed down 86,600 acres of surrounding trees and wildlands. 57 people died. The powerful eruption and its devastation are captured in pictures, along with nature's slow recovery to bring the mountain back to life.
