Snow ending, freezing temperatures moving in

by KING 5 News

Updated Wednesday, Jan 18 at 5:36 PM

SEATTLE -- Meteorologists say the heavy snow falling on Puget Sound is slowly dissipating, but temperatures are expected to dip below freezing tonight, which will create icy roads tomorrow morning.

KING 5 Chief Meteorologist Jeff Renner says the snow that blanketed snow is slowly tapering off.

"In the central Puget Sound area, temperatures will dip in the mid to upper 20s, with outlying areas even colder," said Renner. "That means any slush, any snow, any ice is going to remain. It's going to be very slick tomorrow morning." Check the team's latest forecast here

Snow began falling in Olympia around midnight Tuesday and gradually traveled north to Tacoma and Seattle. By late Wednesday morning, more than 10 inches of new snow fell in Olympia and two inches in downtown Seattle.

Has your route been plowed? Check the City of Seattle map

According to KING 5 meteorologists Jeff Renner and Lisa Van Cise, between 1.8 inches to 17 inches of new snow accumulations were recorded around the Puget Sound region. Here are some of the totals, sorted by county:

  • Island:  Coveland 7.5", Langley 7.1", Camano Island 6", Coupeville 4.5", Oak Harbor 4"
  • King County: Kent 9.8", Federal Way 5.5", Woodinville 5" Issaquah 4.3", Sea-Tac 4.2", Shoreline 3", Bellevue 2", Seattle 2"
  • Kitsap:  Olalla 5", Poulsbo 4"
  • Lewis: Chehalis 17", Winlock 16"
  • Mason: Shelton 11", Belfair 7.5"
  • Pierce: Orting 8", Tacoma 7.5", Puyallup 6", Parkland 4.8"
  • Thurston: Grand Mound 15", Olympia 14", Lacey 13", Yelm 12"
  • San Juan: Mount Constitution 9", Friday Harbor 6.5", Lopez Island 1.5"
  • Skagit: La Conner 5", Convrete 3.6", Anacortes 3.5", Mount Vernon 2.5"
  • Snohomish: Lake Stevens 9", Stanwood 8.7", Lynnwood 5.5"
  • Whatcom: Bellingham 1.8"

KING 5 also asked viewers to share how much new snow they received in their backyard.

Heavy snow has been falling in Washington's mountains with up to 2 feet of fresh snow expected by the end of Thursday.

Nearly all school districts in Western Washington canceled classes Wednesday; however, Schools have not determined their plan for Thursday. For the full list of school closures/delays, click here.

Dozens of flights out of Sea-Tac Airport are canceled. Alaska Airlines has canceled most of their flights to and from Seattle and Portland. Alaska is waiving change fees for customers traveling Tuesday through Thursday in those cities. Spokeswoman Bobbie Egan says tickets must be exchanged and travel completed by Jan. 22.  Click here to rebook Alaska flights. Other airlines have also canceled flights; click here to check the status of your flight.

Washington State Patrol was responding to hundreds of weather-related accidents around the Puget Sound.

The Washington State Patrol says the key to driving in winter conditions is to take it slow and leave plenty of room between your car and the other cars. Check the snow Futurecast

And if you do get stuck, stay in your car.

“You become like a bowling pin for other drivers so stay in your car, dial 911, we’ll get to you,” said Trooper Keith Leary. "You've got protection in that vehicle. Once you get out of that car, you just become another obstacle for drivers to hit. Drivers are focusing on you and they may slide into you."

Be particularly careful on bridges and other elevated roadways. They are more likely to be frozen over than the surface streets.

Troopers also advise packing an emergency kit with non-perishable food, bottled water, chains and emergency equipment like reflectors and flares, and be sure to carry a blanket or extra clothing in your car to bundle up if you get stuck.

If you are looking to taken public transportation, check the schedules: King County Metro, Sound Transit, Community Transit and  Pierce Transit.

We should just see rain by Thursday and Friday. Highs at that point will be in the low to mid 40s.

Just happen to be at the Barrett/Jackson auto auction today in Scottsdale Arizona. Awesome cars and it's amazingly beautiful today, blue skies and 70 degrees. The white stuff up there certainly makes everything look kind of picturesque but I'm still glad I missed it. Stay warm everyone and please drive safely around the Emerald City. Peace to all ..

Snow? What snow? I just watched from 12:10 to 12:15 AM early Wednesday morning on NW Cable New's weather report - what a joke. They continued to predict snow "tonight" yet they didn't mention a single area where it is (or was) currently snowing. Just like last night (Monday night) all of the stations predicted snow for Seattle - yet if any of the weather people had bothered to step outside they would have noticed that the temptures had risen about 3 degrees to 37-38F in Seattle - so no snow within the city. Hmm, the hysterical forecasts from all of the channels have cost school districtsand businesses tens of thousands (maybe 100,000s) of dollars. Too bad it will be impossible to sue the TV and radio stations for this. I think we'd all be much better off if they reported on real weather while it is happening than trying to predict what will happen when the weather models really suck for the Puget Sound area.

Looking at radar snow moving quickly up from the south as well as off the coast. Iam starting to think we may end up with a lot more then 3 in here in north seattle as well as points north plus the snow getting here quicker then they expected. Just a gut feeling

I see on the list of cities and towns with their predicted totals that no place on the Kitsap Peninsula is mentioned. Should I assume there will be no snow fall in Poulsbo, Bremerton or Port Orchard? Or should I assume that the poor "county cousin" (yes no r) across the bay from Seattle is once again overlooked? Hmmmm....

Alright, so after story after story of "Snowstorm 2012," I'm sitting in Seattle and have seen ZERO inches of snow. Great work guys, great sensationalism in your reporting. Now I read reports that the storm may be further south. Absolutely hilarious. Does it take ANY kind of formal education to do what you folks do? At least the talking heads over at KIRO have the brains to put someone attractive on the air in Rebecca Stevenson. She gets the stories wrong 9/10 times, but it's obvious she was just hired for people to gawk at and not to accurately report weather. Keep up the good work fellas. I look forward to the continued ZERO inches of snow I've gotten so far.

School districts often closed based upon the surrounding areas to the district as well. Smooth operation revolves around staff and administrators being able to safely drive into work. Most districts have a limited supply of substitutes and the safety of the staff and their families are also taken into consideration.

Lisa_Marie_Vf62 said on January 17, 2012 at 6:00 PM

People need to consider the reasons for school closure, isn't necessarily based on the area closest to the school, but the surrounding areas as well. Staff, teachers, and administrators often live in outlying areas. It is often difficult to replace 2/3 of your staff, if they live in outlying areas and are unable to come in due to being snowed in or if the road conditions pose a safety hazard to staff reporting in.

Kingsgate update: Snow's been coming down for a while now. Roads are treacherous - especially on hills. Be careful. Lots of people - not necessarily "idiots" - have never had much opportunity to learn to drive properly in snow and even an experienced snow driver can't always make a wimpy car get going again after being forced to stop while going uphill.

Used to live in Alaska and from that perspective - what we have here isn't much more than heavy frost - BUT if you're not used to driving in it and can afford to stay home - better to be safe and warm. Lots of folks HAVE to get to work and public transpo may not be an option. Being an "expert snow driver" is great, but not a big help if you have what you call "idiots" around you that are slip/sliding away. Think we all need to be patient and as courteous and safety conscious as possible and then just enjoy the snow. Don't care how old you are, it's still sort of exciting to wake up, look out the window and see a world covered in SNOW!!!!! :o) .

Right Aziza. Out there it usually freezes before it snows too. Makes for decent traction. The melt during the day and freeze at night is hell before you ad the hills and the idiots that drive like, well, idiots.

this is incredible...we have had absolutely no snow in the Warm Beach area and very very little in the Stanwood area...we seem to be in this strange area between two areas that have been hard hit by snow and we have been exempt..very strange...

nguminh? That statement always comes from someone from the midwest. But its not the "snow", its the ICE. Seattle has a marine layer and therefore the snow is "wetter". Its not "dry" as even the eastern part of the state. Secondly, Seattle is hilly unlike the midwest. The best way to drive on iced over hills and roads is to not drive at all. A little kitty litter on the walkway/ steps is also a good idea :0)

typically 101 in Thurston/Mason county are horrible with the littlest amount of snow. . . . .after watching it snow in thurston basically all day, thought for sure it would be a crawl. Surprised to see snow plows actually cleared the road, seemed to be de-icer and was trouble free commute. GoodJob & Thx.

I could bet that school will be cancelled for the kiddos till Thursday maybe Friday depending on how much and how fast it disappears. Looks like some kids may be going to school till July.

Anyone who looks forward to having snow and ice on the roads and shovel the s__t, and drag snow berms into your garage with mud and slop, needs to have a psychiatric evaluation for the Meat Head syndrome... So whats your Beef ?

The winter weather has once again allowed me to step back and enjoy the beauty of nature. I'm hoping for the 4 to 8 inches of snow they're predicting, so I can spend some time at home and enjoy it. Stay safe, everyone.

There are about 2" of snow on top of crusty ice in my neighborhood. This is not "a few snow flurries" although it's hardly Snowmageddon either. I welcome the attempt on the part of the local news outlets to at least TRY to advise people not to be stupid. If you don't know how to drive on snow and you can put off your errands....do it. You'll be much happier not stuck in a ditch.

Every time there is a few snow flurries in this area, the media goes totally nuts with all kinds of forecasts, predictions and scares. They totally forget about any other news that is going on! Just ridiculous!

When the weather conditions are bad like now or just beautiful. We should all take a deep breath and slow down. Taking a few minutes longer getting some where can give you a few more years to enjoy life and your families. Hope all of you have a safe drive home.

mickeygirl03 They just got into snow on the side of the road. They were okay. Just ticks me off how rude the truckers are lately. It used to be they were courteous and great drivers. Boy has that changed. Yes the plate numbers were turned in. I'm also calling Cascade beverage about their driver.

Most drivers were very careful this morning. Except for the BC truckers. It's time the WASP cracked down on their tailgating, excessive speed and using the left lane. Also Cascade beverage truck going south on I5 this morning, you ran one vehicle off the road. I have your plate numbers and will be reporting you.

Weather or not .... Well, if everyone in the United States wanted to live in year round near-perfect weather there would be 300 million people in the Virgin Islands or perhaps Sardinia in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. As that is clearly not a tenable situation, I imagine that the vast majority of Americans are simply going to have to tough out the next few months. 'Til then, throw another log on the fire, brew up a nice pot of hot coffee and read a good book ... perhaps something like " The Sun Also Rises " Peace to all
