Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers broke a five-game losing streak Sunday, topping Robert Griffin III and the penalty-prone Washington Redskins 21-13, prompting coach Mike Shanahan essentially to throw in the towel on the season. At 3-6 on the season, it would mark the beginning of a run toward the playoffs.
