PUYALLUP, Wash. -  A Puyallup tribal police officer is recovering after crashing his cruiser during a high speed chash in Puyallup.

Pierce County sheriff's deputies said the officer tried to pull over a reckless driver late Tuesday night on Canyon Road. The reckless driver sped off, slammed his car into a power pole and then fled on foot.

The pursuing officer also crashed his car into a fence and rolled his cruiser onto its side. He has minor injuries but is expected to fully recover.

Police are still searching for the suspect.

Starsandstripes, what exactly were "these" weather conditions when this happened?

Doesn't matter if they are tribal, caucasian, black whatever. Why in these weather conditions would he have chased a suspect? Why not get his plate number and call in for assistance in the search. He obviously acted on intense emotion, meaning he was determined to get this driver no matter what.

Most of the Tribal Officers have also earned degrees--some are even working toward Master's Degrees, as well. The Department is fully cross-commissioned with the City of Tacoma, and Pierce County, as well. Finally, in case you don't remember, the Governor has recognized all Tribal Officers in the State as general authority Washington State Peace Officers, as long as their training meets the standards set forth by the Criminal Justice Training Commission. The training level and credentials of the officers of the Puyallup Tribal Police Department exceed that standard. Oh, to the guy who said that he would run a Tribal Officer into a fence...go ahead and try, if you want to. It's been my experience that the only ones who complain like that are criminals themselves.

Excuse me, folks...your racism is showing. So, here's a question. If one of you fine, upstanding citizens had an emergency and you needed the police--when the officers arrive, would you really care if they were Federal, State, County, Municipal OR Tribal? For all of you who want to make the snide remarks, the officers of the Puyallup Tribal Police first attend a 5 month law enforcement academy--the same one that is administered to ICE/Customs/Border Patrol and other Federal agencies. When they return from that, they THEN attend the academy in Washington State--the Criminal Justice Training Center, which all peace officers in the State of Washington are required to attend. Some folks here have mentioned "the boundaries" of the reservation. If you don't want to cross the reservation line, you might want to stay out of NE Tacoma, the entire City of Fife, a good chunk of unincorporated Pierce County as well--and areas around Graham, Packwood and even going toward the Pacific.

Retiredcop, there is no such thing as a "Drug Recognition Expert". Cops just make all that up. Even doctors can't do what some cops claim they are experts at.

scorpionxena, what are you talking about? Maybe you should do a little research before making false statements. The Puyallup tribal police officers are cross-deputized and have federal, state and local arrest authority. Before I retired I worked many DUI cases with a Puyallup Tribal officer who was a state DRE (drug recognition expert). He was the top DUI officer in the entire state ffor several years.

well sorry for the officer, but he had know right to chase the man or woman off tribal land. he should have followed the car with out turning his lights on and called for pierce county or tacoma as thats the way they were heading!!! they should charge the officer for reckless indangerment for causing this accident... and why was he out of his territory

I can't believe how stupid and racist people can be. It doesn't matter if an officer is Native-American, African-American, Mexican-American, Asian-American or Caucasian. They all have sworn to protect and serve. They are all willing to lay their lives down to protect people, even stupid and racist people. My son is a Tribal officer, and I am very proud of him. He has put his life on the line far too many times to protect people that spit in his face and show total disrespect to him and his uniform, just because he is a Tribal officer. Oh and P_L go ahead and run or try to harm a Tribal officer and see how fast you are arrested and placed in jail, by State Troopers, and Sheriff Deputies. An officer is an officer and deserves respect and gradatude for the job they do and the kind of people they have to deal with on a daily basis. I give my thanks to, and pray for all police officers and their families, whether Tribal or not.

"chash", that a new word for when a chase ends in a crash? Tribal, what percent is the officer? Will the sovern Nation of Puyallup want to spend some cash, and put out a few signs to let the rest of us know when we enter you teritorial bounderies, or even make them a little less confusing. Sorry for the Officer, but if the guy was already doing reclaess driving the "chash" was not going to end well.

Police should never chase other cars at high speeds. They or the suspect always run into an innocent victim and hurt them. The police officer should be prosecuted for reckless endangerment and fired for police malpractice.

Tribal police are in the same league as the rest of law enforcement, Puyallup_Leon. I have crossed paths with them here in my neighborhood, and they are a professional bunch- I appreciate their presence here in Tacoma!

Sounds like Dances with Sheep needs to sell cigars in front of the drug store for a while. A tribal wanta be trys to stop me while not on treaty land and I'll send him into a fence too. They claim they don't have to follow our laws so they have no right to uphold them either.

Wake up people and stop making fun of officers who are out there protecting us! The one in the wrong here isn't the officer, I pray that he is alright. I have narrowly escaped numerous accidents from people speeding and passing over the yellow line on that street.

Puyallup Tribal? Well, considering the suspect probably fled on a Warhorse, this is no suprise. Those things can cut through trees like it's nobody's business
