TACOMA, Wash. - More than a thousand people mourned the deaths of Charlie and Braden Powell at a public funeral Saturday, nearly a week after the young boys' father killed them and himself in a gas-fueled blaze.

"We want to celebrate their innocence today," said the Rev. Dean Curry, lead pastor of Life Center Church in Tacoma. "We want to be grateful for the moments we had with these children."

The boys' grandfather, Chuck Cox, thanked people of all faiths all around the world who had prayed for them.

“It helps us to be strong and helps us to know that there are good people in the world, good people that would fight against evil,” he said.

“All their teachers, their social workers, the police, everyone was doing everything they possibly could to keep them safe and help them and love them,” he said. “We thank you for your support."

At the front of the church's sanctuary, the boys were in a single casket topped with a large flower arrangement that included daisies, roses and sunflowers.

"We know that they're with their mother," Cox said, remembering his daughter, Susan Powell, who has been missing for two years and is presumed dead.

The boys' father, Josh Powell, was in the middle of a custody battle with Cox when he set fire to his rental home in Graham last Sunday.

Charlie’s kindergarten teacher, Tammy Ougheon, said the 7-year-old had a great appreciation for nature.

“He loved rocks, sticks, leaves and bugs,” she said. “On many occasions he tried to sneak a worm or caterpillar into the class. He was always a good sport whenever I caught him and he would make sure the bug was safe and sound before joining the class.”

Christie King, one of Braden’s teachers at the YMCA Pre-K program, said the 5-year-old walked through the door every day with a smile on his face.

“Braden had an enthusiasm for life and took pleasure in everything,” she said.

The service was initially planned for The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Puyallup, but the family agreed to move it for two reasons -- to a venue large enough to hold the expected number of attendees, and to a venue where television cameras could broadcast it. The family wants the broadcast so mourners in Utah who can't travel to Tacoma can watch the service.

There will be a private family burial on Monday.

The boys, 7-year-old Charlie and 5-year-old Braden were killed by their father, Josh Powell, on Sunday in a fire at his Graham home. Powell, who died in the fire, was a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife two years ago.

If you’d like to leave a message for the family of the boys, you can sign and view an online guest book.

The Curnow Funeral Home has set up an obituary and memorial page.

Visitors to the memorial page can sign the guest book, send flowers or a sympathy card, or send private condolences.

It's been nice being in Hawaii the last few weeks. No news, no Seattle Times, no drama. I checked out King5 for the weather and all this! Powell kids dead, Whitney Houston and a bunch of other bad news. I am heading back to the beach. NICE sunset tonight!!

The Powell's attendance was handled well and without an issue. I give everyone credit for making it about Charlie and Braden, and of course, Susan, and not mentioning their father once. Let the healing begin and the loss gentled for the Cox family and Jennifer Graves and her family. I just don't know what to think about the Powell family . . . it troubles me that there are law enforcement reports out there that the Graham house was set up for visits and that Josh continued to live in his father's home with his siblings. If that is the case did they have a feeling or know what his plans were or that he was slipping over the edge. The aunt and uncle of Josh are delusional and blaming everyone but Josh is plain ridiculous. Josh was the monster and it sounds like he had been for the past 20 years. The world is better without him in it but not the two precious boys. I am glad they are in the comfort of their beloved mother.

Only love can conquer the evil that caused this. Please keep that in mind and heart as we walk through our day. May the boys be in their mothers arms now.

Just saw this on the ABC news site (in reference to the storage unit): "Josh Powell visited the unit one day before he killed himself and his two sons, Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5." Makes me wonder what he was doing there?

I just watched the service. Very touching tribute to the Charlie and Braden. I am happy that the families were able to put their negative feelings aside long enough to honor the memory of the innocent boys' memories.

I feel such a huge gratitude to the Life Center Church for offering their church for this service. I think through this combining between the Evangelicals and the LDS folks, there can be a better understanding on both sides of what the other believes, and see that we're really not all that different. I thank the community as a whole for how this has been handled, and I'm sure Chuck and Judy would say the same thing. It was a beautiful, heart wrenching service, and one I won't ever forget. You'll never be forgotten, Charlie and Braden. Two beautiful little boys with hearts of gold, you're with your mommy again.

We as a community have done well handling this tragedy. Usually, we are collectively very quick to express our grief through intense anger at someone in the system: a CPS social worker, the social service system, the police, the fire department, the court system. This time, there has been some grumbling about the 911 dispatcher and the location of the supervised visitation for the boys, but by and large, we have expressed ourselves through love for the boys and embracing those who tried but couldn't prevent this horrific occurrence. I say thanks to the Cox grandparents for modelling this approach for us. Through their intense grief, they have refused to get embroiled in anger and have kept us remembering two little boys and their mother and the sadness of their loss. I really hope we have turned a corner and will remember this the next time a child or children is the victim of a terrible crime. God bless all who tried to make a good life for these boys.

We will be attending this Saturday. These boys have really touched our lives. I watched the court when the grandparents got to keep custody of the boys and I cheered with happiness. When I heard this story on Monday morning, on the way to work, my heart just fell apart and I cried. I feel like these are my own children. The family is in our prayers. I am so sorry this happened and will join in the ceremony on Saturday.

If the Powell family knows what is good for them they probably should not show up! I just do not think that the public would be very receptive to that! The Powell family is pure poison and their piece of s***! kin took everything from his wifes family! What a selfish and possesive low life!

Consuela, it's in Pierce County, it would have to be Sound Transit or Pierce Transit. Metro doesn't go to Tacoma.
