SEQUIM, Wash. -- The 78-year-old owner of a yacht that exploded in Sequim this week remains critically injured, but divers were able to haul up most of the yacht's hull that sank.
The 38-foot yacht exploded at the John Wayne Marina Tuesday evening.
It blasted the owner of the boat into the water, severely injuring him. Bystanders rescued him before paramedics and firefighters arrived on the scene. His exact injuries are not known.
Ballard Diving & Salvage was called in to raise the damaged hull from the bottom of the marina. Workers used a small crane barge to lift it out of the water.
Pictures of the damaged hull show the left side completely blown out. Firefighters have not yet said what may have caused the explosion.
From pictures, the name of the yacht is the Escale, from Seattle.
Firefighters said the explosion was so powerful, nearby boats were damaged.
Oil and gasoline that spilled from the yacht was contained immediately. Cleanup continued on Thursday, monitored by the Washington State Department of Ecology and U.S. Coast Guard.
