The first full teaser trailer for “Iron Man 3” was released Tuesday, and if the two minutes of footage is any indication, it’s going to feel a lot darker than the first two films.
With foreboding music in the background, Tony Stark (played again by Robert Downey, Jr.) talks about not being able to sleep and, when he does, he has nightmares.
“Nothing’s been the same since New York,” says Stark, in reference to last summer’s “The Avengers” in which Stark nearly died while saving Manhattan from nuclear destruction.
Stark also wonders out loud if he can protect “the one thing I can’t live without,” his girlfriend Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).
Stark’s new enemy is The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), who is known from Marvel Comics lore as an expert in science and combat.
“Some people call me a terrorist. I consider myself a teacher,” says The Mandarin. “Lesson number one. Heroes. There is no such thing.”
One of the scenes shown in the trailer has been much talked about on blogs in recent months – helicopters fire missiles and destroy Stark’s California cliff side home while Stark and Potts are inside.
The trailer ends with Stark dragging his broken Iron Man armor through the snow.
“Iron Man 3” is due out May 3, 2013, according to the Marvel website. However, the trailer says it’s coming out in April.
“Thor: The Dark World” is expected out in November 2013, followed by “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in April 2014.
Those are all expected to set the stage for “The Avengers 2” in 2015, with Joss Whedon again directing.
