Speed skating champions from around the world will be in Federal Way Thursday to compete in the second National Speedskating Circuit competition of the year.

The local circuit is the first and only professional league for inline speed skating and it hosts four events per year, all hosted in Federal Way.

Thursday’s event will be held at Pattison’s West Skating Center in Federal Way, where the group practices and where Olympic speed skater Apollo Ohno got his start.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 6:45 p.m. Kids 6 and under get in free.

Speed skating is the second most popular in the world, after soccer, with participants on five continents with 114 national governing bodies.
