In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, news outlets provided 24-hour-a-day coverage of the aftermath.

In an era which advertising revenue is key for TV stations to stay afloat, most stations, including KING 5, did not run a commercial spot for several days. We mainly ran continuous NBC and MSNBC live coverage, but dipped in during our regular newscast times with local updates.

It wasn’t until Saturday, Sept. 15 during KING 5 Morning News that our first commercial since the attacks aired.

On the evening of 9/11, KING 5 News produced a two hour newscast about how Western Washington was reacting to the attacks. We have broken it up into eight parts, which you can watch via the links below.

Part 1: Reports on the attacks, reaction from Seattle and the shutdown at Sea-Tac Airport

Part 2: McChord AFB response, security at the Blaine border and Washington State ferries

Part 3: Pres. Bush address, live report from The Pentagon and interview with Sen. Patty Murray

Part 4: Analysis of how terrorists could have taken over planes and videographer recalls scene

Part 5: Reports on blood donations, disruptions in communication and religious services in Seattle

Part 6: Reports on Muslim backlash, military security and reaction from high school students

Part 7: Interview with Gov. Locke, advice on talking to kids about the attacks and pro sports shut down

Part 8: Commentary by Jean Enersen and a final look at the images of Sept. 11, 2001.
