CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron Micheli's family ranch has received more than $132,000 in federal agricultural subsidies in recent years, according to a database that tracks such payments.
The Farm Subsidy Database shows that Micheli's ranch in Ft. Bridger received the payments from 1995 through 2009. The Environmental Working Group maintains the database.
Micheli, one of four GOP primary candidates, doesn't dispute the figures. He says more than half of the money was for drought disaster subsidies. He says another $32,500 helped pay to move corrals away from a river at the federal government's request.
Micheli has campaigned on cutting deficits and ending federal intrusion. He says he regards helping citizens respond to disasters as a proper job for government.
