NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Will the big money that's come into Newark, N.J., leave with Mayor Cory Booker?
Booker's the favorite to win this fall's U.S. Senate special election.
He gets mixed reviews for how he's run the city, but no one disputes that he's gotten lots of money to come into Newark. Most of it has been through philanthropy and development.
The most high-profile donation is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's $100 million matching grant to city schools.
Zuckerberg has admitted he knew nothing about Newark before meeting Booker.
Booker says the projects have momentum and he will continue to be involved if he becomes a senator.
The city says about $1 billion in development projects are in the works now. Most are downtown, where Panasonic North America and Prudential are building new headquarters.
