Reykdal defeats Jones for State Superintendent

Chris Reykdal edged Erin Jones in the race for Washington's Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Voter totals showed Reykdal with 51% of the vote and Jones with 49% as of Thursday afternoon.

Reykdal is filling an open seat after outspoken current superintendent Randy Dorn announced he's retiring. Dorm served two terms in office.

Democratic Rep. Reykdal was elected to the State House in 2011, where he served as Vice Chair of the Education Committee. Reykdal was previously deputy executive director of the state board for technical and community colleges and a Tumwater School Board member. He also earned Dorn’s endorsement.

This is the first time Jones has sought elected office. Jones is a former teacher, district administrator, and assistant superintendent in the state superintendent’s office. She worked most recently with Tacoma Public Schools. Jones resigned from her district position in June to campaign full time.

Funding the McCleary Decision, which is estimated to be about $4.5 billion, will be one of the biggest tasks for the next legislature, a job that will need to be spearheaded by the superintendent.
