Wash. Senate OKs suspension of Initiative 960

OLYMPIA, Wash. - With a second vote in as many days, the state Senate has suspended a tax-limiting voter-approved initiative.

Wednesday night's 26-22 vote came a day after majority Democrats said they accidentally voted on the wrong version of the bill. The measure now heads to the House, where a public hearing has been scheduled for Saturday morning.

Approved by voters in 2007, Initiative 960 requires that two-thirds of the Legislature approve any tax increase, opposed to the simple majority approval needed for other bills.

The Senate on Wednesday endorsed suspension of that rule until July 2011, when the next two-year budget cycle begins. It's a move majority Democrats said they needed to make as they deal with patching a $2.6 billion budget deficit.

You have to read the whole document, "Oldguy." You can't take phrases out of context and expect to get the intent of the document. Also spend some time pondering the writings of the founding fathers. There's nothing there about forming a socialist/communist state. They were fierce individualists that would have never put up with massive government and public handouts. Getting back on point though...what's this got to do with the sheer nerve of the legislature in going against the clear intentions of the majority in restricting rampant tax-and-spenders by requiring 2/3 majorities for tax increases? They're suposed to work for us, not the other way around -- and they haven't been doing a very good job for a very long time.

Kind of interesting how every stingy mean-spirited Republican type comes charging out of the woodwork protesting efforts to patch up the damage done by the Cheney- Bush Administration. But not one of them want to acknowledge that their own love-child did the damage. It's almost like the mother of the girl who brutally beat another girl in the bus tunnel saying her daughter is a good hearted innocent we should all forget about, and the victim should not be helped. Bumble-headed complainers keep saying we need to honor our nation's Constitution but apparently haven't noticed that it starts out by saying that 'We the people" intend to "promote the general welfare" and uses words like "insure domestic Tranquility," "secure the Blessings of Liberty," and most important, "form a more perfect Union." "Union" sure sounds like togetherness as people pitch in to help other people instead of the stingy, self-centered, and mean-spirited protesters we have these days.

Oh! One more thing... While you're blaming all the woes of the world on our past president, consider... (1) The president does not have the power to spend a dime of taxpayer money without the consent of congress (which for just about all of Bush's term was controlled by Democrats) ... (2) Show me in the US and/or state Constitutions where people have the "right" to welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing, etc., etc., etc. You won't find it, because it isn't there.

jackwong... All I know is that the majority of the voters in this state made their intentions very clear -- 2/3 majority vote for tax increases. Where do the "they know better than us" politicians that are supposed to represent the will of the majority get off overruling us? If the budgetary issues are as great as the politicians would have us think, then achieving a 2/3 vote shouldn't be a big deal. Next issue...quit blaming Bush for everything. This mess is the result of a tax-and-spend, power thirsty, and money drunk state legislature, not Bush. GEEZ!

They need to go . . . . If these 26 individuals receive even one vote during their run for re-election that means the citizens of this state are saying it is okay to go against the wishes of the people. Why would any of them start the process to allow more taxes to the people. Especially at a time when so many are struggling to survive. If they would work this hard to eliminate the waste and fat from their departments and programs there would be enough money to run the state with the funds already being collected. If the waste and fat were eliminated then the people would have an easier time approving more taxes with the knowledge that the money is not being wasted.

You all keep talking about government waste, and such. The waste you are talking about are real families who are relying on it to survive. Such as basic health, food stamps, subsidized housing, subsidized utilities, etc. Things people need everyday to survive. Why don't you all complain about Bush when he brought our country into a war that drains our country of our money? The Democrats are just trying to allocate more funds for real americans with real problems. With the suspension of this initiative, we can finally take a breather and balance the budget once and for all. I know of struggling families who has had their basic health cut... one's health should be a human right! We need it back to pre-2008 levels now!

Voting is an opinion poll and we are saaying we are not happy. we want honest politics who represent the people. if you are exempt from bills you vote on you are not representative. No more retirement with full pay, must pay into everything your constituents pay into, ie, social security, and no more free medical, no more extravagant raises, i want to be represented the way our forefathers envisioned. wake up Rome is rising and it will fall.

What arrogance these Senators display. It really shows the contempt these politicians have for the public. In most Democratic countries the Government is afraid of the people, unlike in the U.S. where most are afraid of the Government. Did they forget that whoever signs the checks is the boss. Seriously folks, this is getting out of hand.

Jackwrong- Let me figure out what you are saying. So if we have alot of money sitting in a account, lets say tax revenue for schools from lottery profits. repealing I-190 would allow you to devert those funds for social programs? Maybe you mean Federal Stimulus money that was designed for, lets say,Interstate and Highways can now be used for Americorps. To me, this seems like a bandage and not a real solution. What happens if this recession last longer? Whats the back up plan then? We have ransacked every pocket we got without planning downrange. How do you plan to refills those pockets of money you borrowed from, or do you? Oh, I forgot LEVIES. Appeal to the tax payers in schools and Medic One etc. yearly levy. But thats not a tax right?

Say Jackwrong, what money gets set aside from 960?? I think you have your bills mixed up.I went to the hearing of the Senate Ways and Means Committee on this. The people against the elected elite from usurping the voters was overwhelming. Those that were for raising everyones taxes were the same leeches who always want more tax payer money fro whatever cause they represent. here's a history lesson for you all. This is the fourth time a Demb legislature has done this since 1980.

we should vote out every politician out and start over, they clearly ignore the will of the people. we may lose some good but we need to look at the bigger picture. I will not be voting for any person in office currently. if this movement can take off we will have taken back our country.

To jackwrong!! your user name has it right!! You are wrong! Everyone I know "do not support " the decision to reverse I-690 as the majority of the people in this state voted for it to pass and that is the will of the people. The Lib's over road the will of the people so they can raise taxes easier. And if you want to talk about corruption look at what you have now!! Tax and spend both state and federal level. The working tax payer is feed up with trying to support the lazy asses and thier own family on a fixed income. Go to work cut your budget to live with in your means, but don't ask hard working folks to keep supporting everyone else.

@___dan___: Everyone I know, including me supports the suspension of this initiative. This initiative constricts money from where WA needs it most. There's no reason for certain dollars to be sitting reserved for a certain thing if it could help the most at-risk of the society who needs it the most. Do you know anyone who is being cut from basic health and food stamps because of the corrupt, capitalistic policies of the Bush admin in the last 8 years? We can't afford any more tax cuts or program cuts... we need to do the common sense thing. This is a step in the RIGHT direction.
