OLYMPIA, Wash. -  State lawmakers have started an overtime session needed to balance a $2.8 billion budget deficit.

Gov. Chris Gregoire wants the special session to last for a week. Lawmakers can stay for a month if needed, but Democratic leaders say they're fairly close to an agreement on patching the state budget.

They plan to cut spending, raise taxes, and use one-time fixes, including federal bailouts. But the details weren't settled by last Thursday, which was the final day allowed for the regular 60-day session.

Special sessions are estimated to cost taxpayers at least $18,000 a day. A lot of that cost comes from the legislators' $90-per-day expense allowance.

Kill the viaduct replacement tunnel (under capacity / through a water table / major earthquake area) and there would be enough money to fund everything at least twice without having to raise taxes or create new ones Budget crisis solved.

I sure am glad that I am not wealthy. I would hate to have to spend insane amounts of money trying to evade my tax obligations, as it is I quite enjoy spending almost 40 cents on the dollar for taxes, not counting what I pay for sales taxes.

I guess they didn't like the facts of my first post. For all the talk about budget cuts this budget is actually increasing approximately 461 million in comparison to the last biennium budget, hence the tax increases. The information is all available on the states website once you figure out how to navigate it.----- They have even set aside 71million to fight lawsuits stemming from the tax increases to come. The politicians are doing such a great job of snowing the states citizens that they see no reason to change tactics. TAX AND SPEND, TAX AND SPEND.

kenawova-if you continue to TAX, TAX, TAX the wealthy and their businesses, their businesses will LEAVE, LEAVE, LEAVE the State!! How will that help?? Your precious Governor Gregoire and Democratic legislators were warned of the projected budget deficit almost two years ago and chose to do nothing about it. Now, judging by most of the feedback that I am hearing they will be rightfully voted out.

To the poster who alleges that the wealthy -- apparently that doesn't include him -- spend "insane" amounts of money to avoid taxes (that makes sense?), I'd respond that many of us who are no better than part of a disappearing middle class spend "obscene" amounts just to COMPLY with our tax obligations, since the federal income tax regulations are so complex. So tell us how an increase in the sales tax, or the cost of chewing gum, or taxes on bottled water (along with increased tax on petroleum, extension of sales tax to some services, surcharges on the business and occupation taxes) will punish the rich but not everyone else? Desperate times, you say? It's likely we haven't seen anything the worst yet.

Kenawova what percentage of your annual gross earned income do you feel the state and federal government ought to have; 25%, 50%? And would they spend it wisely and efficiently? If we increased the amount spent on education in this state by 25% without an increase in teacher accountability would our children receive an equivalent improvement in the education they receive? Imagine how many teachers the state could hire if they taxed away 50% of our combined earned incomes... Would a lousy teacher with 15 students provide them a better education than would an awesome and motivated teacher with 25 students? The typical liberal wants to throw other people's money at every problem without a cohesive or effective plan. Take money from the rich (who earned it) and give it to the poor (who didn't earn it). Give me a break!

1) it's WASTED (not waisted) and DIDN'T (not did'nt). Clearly we're still not spending enough on education. I highly doubt bobknows can balance the budget in minutes. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I, for one, fully support our legislature and Governor in their continued efforts to maintain funding for programs that support the diverse values of Washingtonians. In addition, I say TAX, TAX, TAX - especially the wealthy that spend insane amounts of money trying to evade their tax obligations.

I saw Gov. Haywire on TV looking totally pathetic as she lied to the cameras. She whined that there is nothing in her massively bloated budget that can be cut. Crock of cow manure. Give me minutes with a red pen and the state budget would be balanced without any new taxes. Give me 5 minutes more and we would have tax cuts due. Only a lying liberal cow could even say that there is nowhere to cut in that stinking mess they call a budget.
