SEATTLE -- Republican King County Council member and Attorney General candidate Reagan Dunn tells KING 5 News he will back efforts to legalize same-sex marriage.

In supporting gay marriage legislation, Dunn is staking out a different position from Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna.

Dunn says his position on gay marriage has been “evolving.” As the King County Council prepares to vote on its legislative agenda -- a list of its priorities and positions to the state legislature -- Dunn says he favors a public vote but will support gay marriage legislation regardless.

Dunn’s Democratic opponent for Attorney General, fellow King County Council member Bob Ferguson also supports gay marriage. Last week, Governor Christine Gregoire said for the first time, she will support the legislation.

Dunn says his own marriage to his wife played a role in understanding the importance of marriage to gay couples. The council is set to vote on its legislative agenda later today.

He's got my vote. Plus there's the added benefit of not being Rob "Stab my constituents in the back" McKenna.

Its King County, he has to back this position if he plans to win. Much like his fellow Republican, running for President. He can change his view point later, to acclimate to whatever the privailing winds suggest. He's a POLITICIAN.

@bazwest Funny how the governor is criticized for standing up for marriage equality because she no longer has to run for office, but Dunn is now being criticized for being a "political opportunist." This vote will not help him with his conservative base and may damage him in his election. See for example the very first comment of this post. But his support will begin to change the perspective of conservatives on the issue of gay marriage just as conscientious southerners changed the conversation about civil rights in the 50s and 60s. Dunn is leading on this issue, and that should be celebrated. History is on Dunn's side.

@4hfarmer...sometimes when a position is changed it is just political opportunism. This is not leadership. In this state it is called going with the flow regardless of the moral consequences.

Finally, leadership. Thank you, Mr. Dunn. I'm sick and tired of Republicans legislating the bedroom activity of free-thinking individuals. Who cares what people do? All I know is that there is no such thing as separate but equal. My marriage to my wife is not threatened at all if two men or two women are also married. Maybe they can provide stable, loving households to orphans looking for a home. Now I'm rambling. I'm proud to call myself a Washington Republican today because of your stance. Let's get past this non-issue and get to the *real* problems the state faces!

Good for Reagan Dunn. Finally, a Republican who is socially moderate but also conservative in the areas of taxation and government spending. I consider myself Conservative but just don't like all the hardline positions Republicans seem to be taking these days. Good job!

How about we get government out of the marriage business altogether? Then we don't have to have an argument about this. I can do what I do, you can do what you do, and that's that.
