MERCER ISLAND, Wash. -- Calling congressman Reichert “prairie dog Dave” in a press release, hundreds of unemployed Washington residents are protesting outside Rep. Reichert’s and Rep. McMorris-Rodgers’ Mercer Island office Thursday in hopes to highlight the need for jobs now.
The protest was organized by Working Washington and is scheduled to last until noon on Thursday. Working Washington hopes to form a “Great Depression-Era unemployment line” outside Rep. Reichert’s office, serving free soup while people protest.
In a press release from Working Washington they write, “People are really angry at how Congress has been behaving, and ‘prairie dog Dave’ Reichert has been hiding from his constituents.” They also write that the representatives listen to Wall Street, “But they’re our representative – why won’t Rep. McMorris-Rodgers and Rep. Reichert listen to us?”
There are already two large crowds gathered at the office, on opposite sides of the street and the political spectrum. On one side there are left wing enthusiasts and the other are members of the Tea Party. Mercer Island had to call in extra police officers to get the street cleared.
