The largest group supporting the state’s same-sex marriage law declared victory for Referendum 74 Wednesday.

“This is a clear win,” said Washington United for Marriage campaign manager Zach Silk in a press release. “We have run the numbers every which way, and we can now confidently say that we have won. This is an historic day for Washington, an historic day for our country and, most of all, for families across the state who have dreamed of this day and the wedding celebrations to come.”

Supporters were winning 52 percent to 48 percent as of Wednesday afternoon.

WUM said it’s “impossible” for R-74 to lose now.

Preserve Marriage Washington, which opposed R-74, said Wednesday morning that the vote was too close to call.

“We understand the math is challenging, but there remains a path to victory for us,” said PMW Chairman Joseph Backholm. “Everyone needs to respect the process and wait for the ballots to be counted.”

Approval of Referendum received strong support in polling through the summer, but the numbers tightened up as election day got closer.

Maine and Maryland became the first states ever to approve same-sex marriage by popular vote Tuesday night.
