SEATTLE - With 15 candidates on the primary ballot for U.S. Senator from Washington state, a new KING 5 News poll finds U.S. Senator Patty Murray and Republican challenger Dino Rossi ahead of the pack.

The exclusive SurveyUSA poll of 520 likely Washington state voters finds Murray and Rossi in a tight race.

The poll finds Murray at 37 percent going into the August primary and Rossi with 33 percent, within the poll's 4.4 percent margin of sampling error.

In the poll, 19 percent said they were undecided, five percent supported Republican Clint Didier and three percent supported Republican Paul Akers.

"It almost doesn't matter whether Murray is a couple points ahead or a couple points behind or she's right in there with Rossi," said Jay Leve, SurveyUSA editor. "The two of them functionally are just so far ahead of everyone else that they should be perceived, at least in our reading of the data, as roughly even and together, likely to advance."

For Murray, there is some encouraging news in the impressions voters held about her. In the poll, 38 percent of likely voters said their impression of Murray was favorable; 34 percent said unfavorable. While that it not a huge advantage, Leve points out Murray still appears to be in the favorable column, compared to other politicians such as Governor Chris Gregoire, whose unfavorable rating was 50 percent in the same poll.

"Anytime you're a politician and your favorables are positive in this environment, that's a good sign," Leve said.

Meanwhile, a good sign for Republicans is voter frustration with the status quo. The poll asked voters how enthusiastic they are about voting this year compared to last year.  Among Republicans in our state, 49 percent are more enthusiastic this year.  By comparison, the majority of Democrats, nearly 60 percent, say they are no more or less enthusiastic than usual.

"I looked at those results and I said here are the Republicans saying, 'What time do those polls open, when do I get my ballot, I'm ready to go,'" Leve said.

@tootoo: even funnier is that you are most likely an Obama supporter and believe that taxing those that work for a living and giving to those that don't is a good thing. Everything he has done has ended in complete failure. And how about those numbers used to "sell" healthcare reform, just how wrong were those? Only off by over 1/2 billion dollars, to democrats that seems pretty close to accurate. And let me guess, you are against capital punishment (killing a criminal) but find it perfectly acceptable to kill an unborn child. That is nothing short of walking hypocracy. I could care less about gay marriage, there are far more important things to fight for. Your blind support for losers such as Obama, Murray, Cantwell, Gregoire, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi etc. makes you nothing more than a communist thief and a leach on society.

@ballistic: The funny thing is most illegal immigrants probably have a better grasp on the law than you do. I think anyone that still thinks that the healthcare reform is "illegal" automatically loses any credibility that they might have had... Let me guess, you're a libertarian. You want nothing more than lower taxes and the government out of your business. But when it comes to things like gay marriage and abortion, you are against them. Which basically makes you nothing better than a cheap, bigot neocon.

Communist Murray, it is past time for you to go. Your support of the ILLEGAL healthcare reform and blind support of ILLEGAL immigrants in Washington State are proof of your incompetence. Mexico will welcome you with open arms, enjoy your move!

R the citizens of Washington kidding me? Murray was one in line that voted to oust the voters 2/3 majority vote requirement! Guess that just shows that voters really dont want change in Washington State. If things dont change here my vote is moving right on out. Get away from your party and vote based on informed decision on how your politicians are voting. Personally Murray has done good here I wont deny that, but when you vote out inititives that the public has put in place then they loose my vote. It means nothing to her if they vote it out. SO HAVE A VOICE and get away from your party and vote them out that dont listen. Othewise your just a puppet they keep dangling and they will keep pulling your strings!!!!!!

jackwong, I didn't read your whole post, I cracked up when I got to casino Dino. Wasn't it your revered Gregoire that gave the tribes the big tax break? I think it was. *** 2012, REAL CHANGE, NOT CHUMP CHANGE.

Liberals always lie about polls, they call them push polls, in order to push fake perceptions of their candidates. The polling company called Research 2000 admits they gave bogus results because they were caught running fake polls.

Patty Murray has been widely recognized as being one of the dimmest bulbs in the Senate. It will be good to see her take her tennis shoes back home.

I'm certainly for Rossi over Murray. Murray hasn't done a thing for ths state or for this country. Rossi will prevail. Go Dino!

i have ask the last forty people ive talk to and 26 were for murray and 10 for rossi, the ten were my daughters inlaws there all hard core republicans, four people i talked to said they din't really care who was running. i am sure if i ask forty of the home less in down town seattle i would of gotten completly differnt results.the king five pole shows there continued support for the republican party. king five has given rossi five times more exposer than anybody else.as far as polls go you can get any favorable poll for any body ,just choose the right precint. rossi could not carry murrays g string hes nothing more than a republican puppet on a string.

The poll is unfounded. In order for the poll to be just, you would have to take 75% of the poll from the western side of the state, since most of the states population is located there. It is also fair to assume that the western part of the state is strongly Democratic. I think King five is once more trying to create a story by distorting the facts. Murry will win by a landside.

To our fellow Murray supporters... we must team up to defeat Casino Dino as fast as possible before November. To discourage Dino from gaining momentum, 1)we must tell his fellow supporters he has no chance of winning to keep them from going to the polls. 2)Re-energize the waining democrats who are undecisive by telling them that our state NEEDS Patty Murray, else our budget will blow up out of proportion, as she has power with the current executive branch to bring in lots of funding from the federal level. 3)Mobilize the latino votes to get Senator Murray through, thereby, saving the control of all three houses - as we are at the brink of immigration reform to bring amnesty to unite their friends and families. The more power Democrats have at DC, the more beneficial bill we can have for the latino population. Washington State NEEDS Patty Murray... let's show everyone this November!
